View Full Version : VIN's on Body & Frame.
GREGS396 07-25-2004, 12:47:00 PM I know that this has been discussed a few times before. I spent some time yesteday looking my 72 over to see what I could find.
I located several numbers on the car including the rockers, pillar post and a few others. None of them seem to have the actual VIN within them. Most had the 12487, along with some other numbers. Are these just date codes along with the body style? I also checked my 71, and the same seems to apply there. Any imput would be appreciated.
Gary S 07-25-2004, 01:00:00 PM This is something that I don't believe has been really well documented yet for the Second Gen Camaros. Maybe we all need to do some looking and compile the information. Once we have it organized, Madmike could post it on the site for others to use.
I know some members have found the VIN on the body near the heater box. This would be nice if we took pictures to document it.
NW S/D 07-26-2004, 11:55:00 AM Recently I was doing some work on my 73 SD T/A, I found VIN #s on each rocker, under the heater/AC box on the firewall. The VIN # on the firewall was off by two consective numrals the last two. The car is doucmented by PHS and I have all the orignal drivetrain pieces, I'm confiadint this is an error in the numracial stamping. BTW it is norwood built april 73.
Jeff.
75 400 4 Speed 07-27-2004, 10:25:00 AM If the vins on the firewall under heater box don't match the ones on the rockers, it means that someone has replaced the entire firewall and cowl. The numbers must match throughout the car. They are stamped during the final assembly using the same stamp.

GREGS396 07-27-2004, 05:24:00 PM That is not correct. What I am saying here, is that the VIN on the rockers is only a partial one. My car is original and correct, but the numbers on the rockers and other locations, are not full VIN's. They seem to be the first part of one IE: 12487, but NONE have the last part which is unique to each car. The firewall does have the full one there, but not the other locations.
75 400 4 Speed 07-28-2004, 10:20:00 AM The numbers on the rockers that have the first part of a VIN are not true partial vins which are also known as con (confidential) numbers. The numbers behind the heater box are the last part of the vin and must match the public vin on the dash. No if ands or buts. I know this because I have been in law enforcement for over 30 years and one of my jobs is to investigate stolen cars and rebuilt cars for stolen parts and cars pieced together to cover theft. The con numbers (last part of the vin) can be found at two more locations on a second gen. Those must match also. That being said, I cannot disclose their location as it is law enforcement information only.

vfitom2aol.com 07-29-2004, 11:32:00 AM 75 400 is absolutely correct. 75, you have mail.....
Major Dad 07-29-2004, 12:02:00 PM There's also a partial VIN underneath the package tray. If you look close enough, you can locate the other 2 locations.
GREGS396 07-29-2004, 12:45:00 PM I agree with you, just that all that I have seen have the first part of the VIN only. Some of the other numbers seem more like date codes instead of the last part of the VIN.
WS6 08-03-2004, 07:09:00 PM Those are not partial VIN's on the rockers or any other sheet metal parts, they are the model numbers stamped by the steel stamping plant to ID what the parts are for, the name of the stamp die. The rest are just date codes and QC codes.
Don't be surprised to find these cars put together from parts cars. A lot of guys are doing that and they call it Restoration. Anything that fits is all the care about because a great many are doing it only to make a $$$.. There was a few junk yards around here that used to do that till they passed laws to put a stop to it. They would take a couple wrecked cars and make on good one then sell it as a used car. I you did not ask, they would not tell what they did. I once saw a TA a friends son bought that was cut and welded together by someone who must have learned how to weld from a cracker jack box. After a while he could not even close the doors the body was so screwed up. He took it into a GM dealer because it was chewing up tires and they took one look at the car and would not touch it, said it was unsafe to drive. I swear it was 2 cars cut in half (front and back) then welded together to make one car.

Magnus 08-03-2004, 08:03:00 PM T47R12487 is a number that I found on some different locations on my Camaro when I had scraped it to bare metal.
What does it mean, anyone have a clue?
Magnus 08-03-2004, 08:06:00 PM by the way, the VIN is 1Q87F2N143203 so there is no match at all.
WS6 08-04-2004, 07:50:00 AM T47R are date codes for when the panels were stamped.
12487 is the model number for Camaro 2 dr sport coupe, every die would stamp the model number for the vehicle. If it was Chevelle is would have been T47R13637
fyi
The VIN derivative consists of 9 characters 1968 on (8 prior, Div not icl).
the GM Division (1=Chevrolet; 2=Pontiac; 3=Olds; 4=Buick; 5 or T (later)=GMC; 6=Cadillac; 7=GM of Canada, C=Chevrolet Truck Div)
The Model year
The Assembly plant where car was made
The last 6 sequence digits of the VIN
example: 12N500001

If there is a VIN on the rear or package shelf then there are our a lot of Camaro’s running around
with more then one set of Vin's on the car. We clipped quite a few of them through the years
It was a common practice to Clip the rear of a Camaro that was punched hard in the rear. I see “No
Problem” clipping a car as long as it is done correctly. The insurance companies were aware of
it and often recommended the procedure. I guess there would be a problem if the donor
car (Rear Clip) comes up on the HOT sheet. I am not sure how that would play out if it was
discovered that the BACK of your car was HOT due to An unsuspecting body shop buying a rear
clip that was off of a car that was stolen 25 years ago………………...

Major Dad 08-10-2004, 01:20:00 PM It was a long time ago that I saw that number on the package tray, so I stand corrected that it's not a partial VIN. Does anyone have any input as to what that number is?
vfitom2aol.com 08-11-2004, 10:40:00 PM Major dad, What was the number you saw on the package tray? And what was the car's VIN that it was on?
MadMike 08-12-2004, 12:20:00 AM The only hidden vin I've ever seen is here:
http://www.nastyz28.com/~madmike/74z28/74z-hv.jpg
14Nmy-cars-vin stamped upside down.
All the rest of the stamped stuff I've seen is date codes or some other identification for whatever the piece is. Probably only usefull to someone who needs to spot-weld some erector set together to turn it into a car body. It generally doesn't have anything to do with legally identifying the vehicle in any way.
ilchezhead 08-18-2004, 12:32:00 PM How can I get a new tag for the firewall showing all the codes, etc. All I have is a vin number.
