Hello from Finland!

My friend have project car Camaro 1980 Z28 , which came 2010 to Finland from USA.
I found car's build sheet behind backseat and we wonder some texts on it.
What means in 1980 Camaro's build sheet text "SPECIAL 1982 SHOW CAR"? or "Shipped to:GM DESERT PROVING GROUNDS MESA AZ"
Does anyone know something about this car?

No, it's not that car.
Car is like other normal 1980 Camaros. Here is some pictures.

It was quite ugly when he bought it 4 months ago...

As I say we wonder that text in Build Sheet "Show car" because it looks like normal Camaro Z28.
I haven't chevy dealers near us and I think they can't say anything about this car.

The vin is on the build sheet. Does it match the vin on the Dashboard?

I had a buddy in High School that bought a 79 Z that was a proto type test mule at the G.M. Proving grounds. When he restored it years later he found all kinds of paper work stuffed behind and under the seats. We always wondered why that car ran so damn good for a Lazy 79 Z !!

Maybee the date 1982 was a typo. Im thinking thats a build sheet for a 1980 z28.

What color did he paint it? Isn't there a way to contact GM about the vin number to get any info on it? I remember sending my info in and getting something back from them but I don't remember where I entered the info. It was on the net though.....

Vin on the dashboard match to build sheet and trim tag also match to build sheet, so it must be right for this car. It looks like almost everything in car is original, there was original jack in trunk, lot of things under backseat (cents, dollars, etc. )

That build sheet text "Shipped to:GM DESERT PROVING GROUNDS MESA AZ". From Google I found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_Proving_Grounds
That's why one thought is that car was GM's test car. From car you can see that it have been in very hot and dry place, because body is 100 % rust free... that match to Arizona I think and from interior parts can also see that it have been in sunny and hot place.
What you think, is it possible?

New color is Audi's, he keep original interior color but stripe's color he maybe change.

I noticed that the build sheet called for Corvette white paint. The white paint for 1980 Camaro was code 11, Corvette was code 10. Apparently white paints were different.

Well,
I did some PI work today and started dialing that number with a Detroit area code, No Luck. Then I looked over the sheet again and went to Warren, MI's area code and Bingo the number listed is still GM but no longer Dicks. The VERY NICE lady I talked with said there is a Richard Marshal listed in GM's directory but he is currently working with Holden in Australia, I sent her a copy of the BS and a link to this posting, she will forward it to Mr. Marshal and see what comes of it.

Keeping My Fingers Crossed!

On another note, there was a girl here in Tulsa that had an 80 Z/28 that she claimed was a special build and the stripes on the side of the car were different in that the Z28 was not there but that the stripe just had dashes in it to represent the Z28, _ _ _ like that.

My friend's plan was paint it to original color, but in his home town's paint shop they can't find right color, even they got code from build sheet. That's why it is now Audi's white. I think it look good and color is quite near right.

Thanks manicmechanic, maybe you find right person, I hope... so we can get some information of it's history.

Well it didn't pan out, here is the answer I got tonight.

"The Richard Marshall I found in our system has an extra "L" and says this is not him. We don't have any other persons by that name. Sorry. It has been long enough that the person you are looking for may well have left GM. When we reorganized through bankruptcy, many people lost their jobs or retired."

I have 2 thoeries on this car, the first would be that the 1982 was a error, and it was destined to be part of the 1980 auto show circuit, I see it was built in early November 1979, so this would make sense, also the Corvette white was a "brighter'' hue of white than the white that was used on regular production 1980 Camaros. My other thoery would be it was a test mule for the up and coming new for '82 F-body. back then, GM would test different types of cars, to compare with a new style car, either way, I'm sure the car has a interesting past.

That's why one thought is that car was GM's test car.

A car loaded with options like that was more likely some GM executive (at the GM Test Facility) company car and he ordered it the way he wanted. The big wheels at GM got new cars often, couple a year and then they were offered to the dealers or relatives of the original exec.

Also the term 'SHOW CAR' had a different meaning than what you think. A car to show to the press, for parades, on display at the GM site or fr public relations to chauffeur local dignitaries around at some event. I worked with a fella back in the 70's whose brother was a Cadillac Exec. John would tell his brother what make and model car/truck he wanted and his brother would order it, had to drive it a min miles or time (couple months) and then John could buy it but only thru a GM dealer. John used to complain that he was forced to take a loaded vehicle because GM made the exec's order loaded cars/trucks. Matter of fact John still has a loaded with every option 1976 Chevrolet Silverado K2500 with 4-sp trans. I also think it might be painted a special color because we never seen another in the copper/bronze color.
