I understand that the vin number starts at 500001 on the '71 Z-28. Is it possible that the vin number starts at 500001 on the Van Nuys cars and that 510001 starts for the Norwood cars? I can't see how they wouldn't screw up with duplicating the same number from two different plants otherwise. My vin is 510047 from Norwood and it rolled off in the first week of Sept 1970. How could it be that high of a number so early?

I would say that your number is right in line with where the 71s started because back then, that was when the new model years started production.

Maybe it was something as simple as Van Nuys got evens and Norwood got odds? My '70 Norwood Z sequence # starts with 55.
Speculation at best...

No, both plants started at 500001 and went up. Its always been like this with all GM models. So there are 2 cars with almost identical VIN's, and the only difference is the plant code N or L.

Can't be 510047 in Sept of 1970, Where you are getting the date from? I seen a VIN like 511xxx and it was built in 1st week March of 1971.
The National GM strike was from 9/70 to 11/70 so there was no way your car was built in Sept of 1970 because the plants were down from Sept to Nov and the 1971 model launch was delayed.

Norwood and Van Nuys started production on '71's about the second week in August 1970. both plants used 500001 as the starting vehicle. the Vin sequence for September '70 was between 505385 to 513327, for Norwood. The UAW strike hit the plants from 9-14-70 to 11-22-70. Both plants would use the same sequence numbers, but the plant code on the VIN would make the VINs unique. Chris

My trim tag states A 9. First week of Sept 1970. The engine numbers state built on 08/05/70. The car was out in Sept. The plant strike started 9/14/70.

I have the same numbers as chris77 lists here. Norwood got up to 513327 before the strike started in September, so your car was definitely made in the few weeks of 71 production before the strike.
