ok guys i need a little help with decoding some numbers off of my block. first i got the numbers off of the alternator pad and they are v0306xd. then i have a block sitting here in the garage that a friend gave to me. he didnt know what it came out of but it is a 350 2 bolt block. i looked up the casting number on mortec and it says that it is a 70-76 350 it also looks to be stardard bore. i got the numbers off of the alternator pad and i want to find out what these decode too and the numbers are 12n149407 ti206ctl. thanks for any help u guys can pass along about these codes.

I don't have a book to decode your first block, but if memory serves me correctly, the 2 digit codes were used throughout the 60s. I have a bunch of early 327 blocks with 2 digit codes, and I remember that after 1975, Chevy started using single digits (or at least that's what some manuals indicate). Your other block, the CTL, decodes as a 1970 Corvette 350/300 horse 4-speed, Rochester 4bbl. Could be great trade bait for a Corvette restorer looking to go legit. The info I gave to you came from Chevy by the Numbers by Alan Colvin. It's the best, most researched book I have ever seen on Chevy part numbers. You can find them at most major book stores for around $30.00. It's worth every penny when you are looking for resto part numbers. Mine stays by the computer for when I'm patrolling ebay.

hey thanks for looking these numbers up for me. the first numbers were from the engine thats in my 73 right now. i had looked up the casting number and it said that it was a 70 model block. that info came from mortec. the other numbers were from a block in my garage that came from a friend. i was considering having it made into a 4 bolt main block and make a 383 stroker out of it. i have enough extra parts to put together another 350 but i want a stroker motor. maybe i can have a little luck and run across a 400 sbc in the wrecking yard and then i can build a 377 and a 383. hey u never know. hey thanks again for the info guys. jeff

Good catch, WS6. If I had read a little further, I would have seen that CTL was used in 1972 on Nova, Chevelle, Monte Carlo, and Camaro, but the N code gave it away as Camaro. I find it odd that Chevy used the CTL code in 1970 also......

You can't always use the casting number to ID the type of engine. Casting numbers are used in various models over a span of years.

I don't see the casting number so I can tell you of the XD block is a 327 or the 350 but I can tell you without a doubt that that suffix XD was only used in trucks, no cars. If you post the casting number and the casting date I can confirm what it is.

fyi
Block casting are just bare blocks till the engine plant machines them for a particular application and stamps a suffix code (e.g ED) to identify it. Casting numbers could be any one of several different applications, 302, 327, 350.. You use the casting number to find the general use and the suffix to find the applications.
