If the serial number has an N in it about the middle of the numbers, look for an actual Z28 code on the trim tag under the hood. This should be on driver's side above the brake master cylinder just below the windshield. Might go to the home page for this site and look at decoding info, lots and lots of good information there.

Is this the car in question...of course, this one doesn't really look like a project car.

Hey bunchjimmy, the vin must start with 12487 if is is 12387 it is originally a v6 thus no Z....if it has a "n' in the vin # look on the cowltag as tom3 said earlier. However chances are it could have an "l" instead of a "n". If it has the "l" instead of a "n" there will be no Z28 code on the cowltag. In this case look for things like rear bumper guards (commonly overlooked), front and rear swaybars (1" front and 11/16" rear), black knobs on the radio, 8000 rpm tach which starts redlining at 6500, and a 150mph speedometer. If it has the original motor it should have either CTB(4-speed) or CTC(auto) stamped on the engine somewhere. Do a search here on the site for locations of the stamp they have been noted to be stamped in different locations for different plants...Norwood or Van Nuys. Also look for the heavy duty radiator, and floor mounted gas pedal if it doesnt have a floor mounted gas pedal or atleast remnants of one it IS NOT a Z. I could continue but I am not sure if it has the original drivetrain but ask the guy if it does and if so let us know and we can tell you further codes to look for and where to find them. If it is not an rs/z it will have a bowtie on the steering wheel if it is a rs/z it will have an rs on the steering wheel. I hope it turns out to be a real Z. Keep us posted.

Just looked at your profile and saw you were from California, more than likely it will be a Van Nuys built Camaro meaning it will have an "l" in the vin and not an "n" for Norwood.
