Only place you'll find it is on the passenger side, front of block, just below the cylinder head. It is usually behind the alternator. See a ledge stick out just below the head, have the engine code and a partial VIN of the car. Might be dirty and painted over, or if the engine has been redone it may have been machined off.

I did find my suffix code and build date there but still looking for the VIN. Not down by the oil filter unless removed. So still looking.

Some engines have the VIN derivative stamped down by the oil filter. Its located on the vertical engine block flange diresctly up from the oil filter and on the rough casting. Have to be perfectly clean to see the stamping.
1969 they started to use this location on Camaro engine. Seems engine access. like the alternator were in the way to stamp the VIN derivation. Note--Engine code was done at the engine plant but when the engine arrived at the final assembly, it had the carb, dist, alternator etc installed and this happened before the VIN was to be applied and the engine painted.
