I just bought a 1970 Z-28.
Trim Tag says:
ST 70 12487 LOS218524 BDY
TR 725 48 48 PNT
O4D Z28.10
I'm confused about the "LOS", everything else seems to make sense.

I read somewhere sometime that on some tags LOS=Los Angles or a Van Nuys car. I may be wrong but if you dig in the information on this site I believe that the info is here. Hopefully someone can back me up though.

Thanks for the reply.
I've dug around a good bit and can't find anything relating to "LOS".
I've thought that it would probably mean Los Angeles or Van Nuys, but can't find any written proof.
Guess I keep looking and asking.

Did you recently buy this car off ebay?
We just discussed a car with an obviously fra.... "incorrect" trim tag on it that was listed there. You can probably still find the thread where this car was questioned.
An LA built Z28 trim tag will look like this:

notice the BL assembly plant code, and no mention of "z28". LA didn't obviously code that info on the tag. Norwood Ohio did.
See:

Thats the car. Everything seems to be on the up and up except the trim tag.

Thats the car. The car looks good and drives really good. I havent't checked the numbers on the engine and transmission.
It does have a 71 steering wheel, but he sent the right one with the car. The car was taken down to bare metal last year and painted and I think that's when the spoiler was put on.
It's a nice driver, but it looks like I'll have a hard time selling it as a Z-28 when it comes time to sell.
It makes me mad that people would change/fabricate new trim tags like that, but you never know abiut people.
Thanks for everyones help.

Let me preface by saying:
#1: I personally don't care what's "wrong" with a car. I like cars. If/when I point out something wrong or incorrect, I'm not bashing.
#2: This very reason is why I and a lot of other folks are quick to point out "fakes" or clones. Even if the current owners intentions aren't devious... stuff happens.

The steering wheel is a 1972 optional 4 spoke wheel, not a 71 wheel. The 1970 wheel looks like this:

some other booboos were pointed out in the related articles. The transmission, you'll find is a 1970 M21 - not the M22 "rock crusher". This is easy to determine if the thing doesn't whine when you drive it.
The car might be a real Z, with a screwed up trim tag. The car better have a rear swaybar, and it better have a floor mounted gas pedal. If it has a tach, it'll read to 8000 RPM and redline at 6500rpm.
You might be able to find a tire decal in the glove box (or on the door). It'll have inflation specs for 15" tires. Only Z28's had 15" wheels.
I think it looks like a nice car, even if misrepresented. I'd drive it. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Mike,
Thanks for your time.
The car does have the proper tach, gas pedal, tires, and it has the sway bar. It does have an M-22 with the 4.10 rear end.
I bought a car identical to this in 1970 when I graduated from hi school.
I have really enjoyed driving this little piece of history.

Good News today !
I was able to track down the original owner of the "questionable" Z-28.
He confirmed that it was in fact a REAL Z-28. It did come with the 4.10 rear end, but not the M-22. Oh well.
I'm just glad it's a real Z-28.
I am always going to wonder about that trim tag.
Thanks to everyone for their input.

Mike is right.... The tranny is stamped P0102B. B = M21. It's a M21 unless someone changed the internal components.

You are probably better of without the M22. Its a very noisey trans. About all it good for is bragging about. That 4.10 gear is going to cost you money driving around town, not the best for economy.

That steering wheel is from, or could have been from a 71'. Its the same as mine- option NK4 sport steering wheel 4 spoke.
