i am told that this car is a real RS/SS, but how can i check the vin to see and i would also like to know what the original was.????

someone else will help ya with the vin info but for starters the 70 ss cars and z28's are the only ones that got a 12 bolt rear in em. mine had a 3.08 12 bolt single tracker.

Its not possible to tell from the VIN on a 1970 with only one exception. If you look at the 3rd digit in the VIN 12487and its a 4, then it came with a V8. If on the other hand its a 3, 12387 then no way because that was a 6 cyclinder and no such thing as a Camaro 6 cyl SS.

If you can get the VIN and the cowl data plate info, we can probaly help you to some extent but provign an its an SS could be difficult, if the car has been played with. There are a lot of phony Camaro SS's out there, I have seen at least 3 of them selling on Ebay this week. All came with a 6 bnager and were built up to be an SS.

Plus, there's no way to tell if it was an RS by trim or VIN. If it has all the RS options, you just have to assume it is.

the car has the original 12 bolt. and the vin checks out to be a v8 car.

If the car was built in Norwood ohio, the trim tag will note the car is a Super Sport.

If the car was built in LA, check the engine suffix code to see if the engine is from a 1970 SS. Or a 1978 pickup truck. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

8SL18959 is the VIN derivative

8 - Model year is 1968
S - Final Assembly plant is St Loius
118959 - Last 6 digits from the cars vin

Not a Camaro engine, the plant code for Camaro would be N for Norwood or L for Los Angeles.

BUT, there appears to be a typo in the code you submitted. You need to look again and clarify this. I assumed the 1 as that what should be there, if I am not correct then another meaning could be derived.
