I have the orginal dist. that came in my 72.
It is #1112049 dated OF22. This p/n was used in 71&72. It appears the the 1112 was stamped at a different time than the 049 was since it is not in line and the 049 is a bit larger the the first part of the number. The date code is June 22 of 1970 according to the book...so my question is weather they made a bunch of these up in late 1970 for the 71 model year and carried them over for the 72 model also. My engine was built in Aug of 71 for my 72.....this theory would explain the 049 code being put on the part later,,,any thoughts on this one...

for what it's worth, the dist. in my 71 has the correct part/stamp number according to refference material i have seen, but the build date is for sometime in 1970.

i know it to be original to my car, and it also has the 'scribe mark' on it from where the timing was originally set.[ when i pulled the motor to clean/paint things, the marks were still lined up!]

the only conclusion i can draw is that they made a huge supply of distributors and stamped them as needed as they were used.

My opinion is the same as yours GREGSS396. The 1112 series distributor was started in 1970 & ran up to 1976. I think GM stamped the last 3 dgits according to specific application. I'm sure GM also anticipated using hundreds of thousands of these because they were even used in trucks. With the 70 date code it would only stand to reason. The 049 code was only used in 71-72 Z28 w/man trans from what I can tell.

Thanks,I thought this to be the case, but just wanted to confirm it with others. When I got this car it had the original carb and this dist. in a box with some other parts...

Interesting.

The distributor in my 3rd week of March '71 Z (original) also reads OF22 - June 22nd of 1970. I am almost certain that this is the original distributor.

I don't know if that helps.........

Greg,
Same is true with the 2019 Dist. on the 70 cars seems a lot of them have a 9M14 dates. They must of ran enough on that date to cover much of the production.
