View Full Version : matching numbers
steveb70z28 09-15-2002, 06:38:00 PM i have yet to find the stamped numbers on this car, but what i dont under stand is all the part numbers , show the plant it was made at, the date , and even the shift it was made on, they all match the date of the date the car was made within a 2 week period, so if this is a numbers matching car why no stamped numbers?, anyone out there with this same thing , it is a norwood car, but no numbers on the block or by the oil filter, the only thing i can think of is they just didnt stamp it, and if it would have been replaced, like (warranty work)i dont think they would have got an engine made within the 2 week peroid of this cars biuld date ,i did have the protecto plate with this car, until i was at a car show and , someone took it right out of the car, when i was away from it, (i dont do car shows no more) can anyone help me with this ????
spicewood1 09-15-2002, 07:02:00 PM There are numbers, you just haven't found all of them yet. There would be VIN and engine code on the front pad pass side. Even if replaced under warranty, it would be stamped as a service replacement in some way. The numbers have evidently been machined off - common problem. Also, the 2 week rule you mention is rarely the rule - some parts can be a couple months prior to the car - GM did not really care about dates.
SpltBmpr71 09-15-2002, 07:44:00 PM I agree. It may be worth your while to investigate having the numbers pulled from the block/pad chemically.. I don't even know if this is possible if they have been machined off, but I've heard some of the 1st gen guys have done something like this to verify numbers/originality.

DONNIE 09-16-2002, 12:38:00 AM the vin number is not on the pad behind the
alternator, it should be down by the oil filter.

steveb70z28 09-16-2002, 01:40:00 AM haha yes should be, hey donnie nice car my Z28 looks just like that but classic copper with white stripes
jacsey 70Z 09-16-2002, 07:42:00 AM I have to go with Donnie on this one. I have never seen a 70 Z28 with the VIN on the block pad, just the Flint numbers. I've looked at original owner untouched cars that don't have them.
I believe the engines were shipped from Flint with the alternators on the engine so it was way to hard to stamp on the VIN. So they put them down by the oil filter on a rough surface were it is very hard to see them let alone read them.
If the block would of been decked it would of taken off all the numbers not just the VIN.
Steve, I think your car is 100% correct, if I saw a 70 with a VIN stamped on the block pad I would be very leary.
Jack
Michael Joslyn 09-16-2002, 09:25:00 AM My Z was stamped on the pad looked good to me with the original broach marks etc. The 396 is stamped by the filter in the rough casting. These can be pretty hard to see you might just be missing it.
steveb70z28 09-16-2002, 01:57:00 PM haha now we are talking jacsey, thank you, i will try to get time to look there , i have looked by the oil filter but didnt know they stamped it on the rough part, i will let you know thanks again

CamarosRus 09-16-2002, 06:14:00 PM I MAY be able to help out with this problem..My Norwood 70 Z-28 has a trim tag build of 07E. I/We will never know how close or true these tags were. Now my engine was assembled at Flint on July 29th (V0729CTB) so talk about just in time delivery....Anyway I found my VIN # stamped ON THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK in the area between the two freeze plugs(and NOT on Bellhousing flange aka "oil filter area). I can not explain why or how, BUT thats were they are. I bought this car from original owner in 1978 and although I cant prove anything I have no reason to think anything was ever tampered or changed......So go figure that.....Chuck Sharin
jacsey 70Z 09-16-2002, 07:35:00 PM Chuck,
Very interesting about the closeness of your dates, If I had to guess Flint got behind Norwood went ahead and built up your body then waited on the motor. There may of been a weekend, Or the July fourth Holiday mess with it also.
The VIN location is also cool, bet they just told them to put them on and where ever the guy felt like putting them is where they ended up.
I talked to an old guy that painted engines at Flint (I live about 10 miles from the plant) He told me that in 30 years he never painted a bellhousing or an oil pan. He remembers the aluminum intake cars very well, said the bellhousing were on but they would only hit the top edge. To get the oil pan he said you had to get on one knee so they never did the bottom. He said he could paint the entire engine from his chair and never miss a word in his book!!
When I'm ready he offered to come over and paint my motor the way it was not the way it should of been!

steveb70z28 09-17-2002, 12:08:00 PM well i have been under this car for a half an hour i have seen no number"s yet, i have looked in all your loction:s all of you have told me , no number"s yet, i will keep looking, steve
steveb70z28 09-17-2002, 12:55:00 PM ok just got off the phone with the guy i got the car from, lol he wants to buy it back, hope he has alot of money, lol but he did say the number is on the front frange, i have cleaned some more , i can see something, that looks to be numbers , now how do i go about getting it chemicaly removed ???, and ass for the trans he said he could never find it , said some wasnt stamped

spicewood1 09-17-2002, 09:19:00 PM My 70 Z28 LA car and 71 Z28 LA car both have the engine codes and VINs stamped on the block pad under the alternator. Both original.
70CitrusZ 09-22-2002, 02:10:00 AM I think the vin stamp was a somewhat random thing. I've seen some with them on the deck pad, and some without. I just pulled a 300 hp 350 out of a '70 Impala, and it has the same alt set up as a Z mtr, and it has the vin, and the eng code info on the pad,and it matched the car.
WS6 09-24-2002, 08:04:00 PM The engine got the alternators at the car plant not the engine plant. The engine plant could not predict what kind of options would be on the cars and what alternator would be required to power it. There could have been reasons why they could not stamp the VIN on the front pad for some cars. Often these were for convienence and to keep the lone moving. Like the pad was on one side of the engine and the workers station put him on the other side and to have to walk around 100 times a hour took time etc, who knows why. Both locations are correct, it was up to the plant or the shift to get it done one way or the other.

NapierD66 09-25-2002, 07:51:00 PM my numbers are on the drivers side flange, near oil filter.barely able to read until i removed paint w/a wire brush and the paint that stayed in the numbers made them readable.
1970L48SS 10-11-2002, 05:48:00 PM I also have an Van Nuys 70 SS350 and the Vin and engine data are on the front passenger side pad. This engine was made in Tonawanda, NY
