I am looking at buying a 1973 Z-28. Automatic, turbo 400 trans..

From what I have determined its a real Z-28 with the correct motor.
My biggest concern is that there is no paint code for this car on the trim tag. There are just 2 dash marks (- -) before the letters PNT. No # for paint code.
This car is black w/white stripes.
After looking over the car, the owners wife came out with a few papers. One of which was a letter from what I believe to be the 2nd owner of the car, written to the 3rd owner. It was a brief description of the cars history. Dealer it was purchased from and the next owners name. The guy described how this was a specially ordered car by original owner. He supposedly order black paint, which from what I understand was not an available color. Hence the no paint code on trim tag.
I am convinced that this car is an original Z-28 with 20,000 miles on it.
My only concern is that there is no code for the paint.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of this before. Is it possible Chevrolet would accept a special order of a color that was not available in 1973, and paint the car and not put a paint code on trim tag?
This is all that is keeping me from buying this car.

from the factory. Dash dash cars are custom colors.

Thanks for the reply. You are 2nd person that has told me this so far today.

Jims73Z is absolutely correct. So make me 3. My friend had a 1973 Z28 that was Black with White Stripes. He got it new when he graduated from High School in 1973. It was ordered from the same dealer that I purchased mine from.

I have seen a '72 that was special ordered in Black with dashes on the body tag where the paint code was. in '72 as in '73, Black was not generally available but could be special ordered. I've also seen a '72 Z28 that was black and was a stripe delete and showed a dash for the paint code and a DX3 on the tag, the RPO for delete stripes. Chris
