my gas gauge in my 71 SS went bonkers, so i dropped the tank the other day, and i found a 'computer card' wrapped around the filler neck, held on with a very old rubberband [only thing holding the band on was it's semi melted stickum], naturally, it's quite dirty, and i havent 'cleaned' it yet, but thought someone might know what this was for, or if it will add any significant info about the car other than what i already know.

Could be the Protect-o-plate. These were sent with the cars to tell you options and to help deter theft to a certain degree. Maybe the original owner thought they should hide it. If it is it will have the cars VIN on it along with tranny codes etc.

tbill,

I do not know if I can answer your question 100% but seeing that the filler neck had this card attached to it gets me to think that your tank may be a Replacement Tank. Originally the tank was installed on the assembly line as we all know as a unit. When purchased separately from GM the filler neck was not attached to the tank. And as well the filler neck could be purchased separately as well. So I am thinking the tank was replaced or the filler neck was replaced for some reason or another. Was the car ever hit in the rear possibly? It would be interesting to take a good look at the card as to see part numbers and if there is a description or not. Anyway as Forest Gump always said, "Thats all I know about that".

I'll second Bob response on it being a replacment tank. Replacement parts had the old 80 column punch cards attached from the parts warehouses. The card had part number, group number, dealer number, etc.

thanks for the info, i have the card in my tool box at work, i'll have to clean it up and see what it 'says'. there does look to be evidence of the tail light panel having had some work done to it somewhere along the line, some of the welds along the seam of it in the trunk look a bit funny, so perhaps the tank did get replaced if it got bent along with the tail panel.

i'll clean it up tjis week, and post what it reveals.

thanks again guys.
