Hi guys, great site with great info. I have been a reader of this site for quite a while now and never had to post, because I never had a Camaro to talk about. I am hopefully picking one up this weekend, its advertised as a 70 Z28 (my fav. year). I just want to make sure I will be looking in the right place for the vin and other codes so I don't look like an idiot trying to identify this as a real Z and to make sure #'s really do match as he is advertising. The car is a Norwood build just to give you guys a heads up, I remember reading that #'s may have been stamped in different areas if it was built in Norwood compared to Van Nuys.

Places to look for Vin: On the engine pad or vertically above the oil filter on a flat spot parallel with the bell housing. On the Transmission and the Rear End. Or possibly on the left side of block between the two large freeze plugs in the rough casting.

Place to look for Engine Code(s): Stamped on the engine right beside the water pump. Or on a small pad on the passenger side, right behind the alternator(both the engine code and the VIN should be on it).

Places to look for Casting Date: On the right rear passenger side of the block, on top of the bellhousing flange.

Places to Look for Rear End code: On the passenger side facing forward on the axle tube.

Places to look for Transmission Codes: The gear codes, casting numbers, and hopefully a matching VIN is located near the top of the casing on the passenger side.

If there are any places I may have missed that may have the Vin or other codes on them please let me know. Thanks alot for the replies in advance.

Regards
Ryan

Ryan,

First off, wellcome to the BB.

Sounds like have been doing some reading. However in reference to the VIN on a 70 Z28 it will not tell you if it is a Z28 or not. You will want to check the VIN on the Engine vs the one on the car to determine if it is the original engine or not. Same with the Transmission. The rearend will not have a VIN but then again there are some that do.

Here is the deal on a Norwood car. Norwood always put Z28 on the Trim Tag. However in 1970 they left of the Z and it will say 28.19 or 28.10 something like that. The .19 means Black Stripes the .10 means White Stripes. If it is missing the Trim Tag be suspicios. If it does not say 28.something it is not a Z28. If it is a LA car it will not say 28. anything. Go to this page for lots of infomation on Trim Tags.

Or go to this one for even more info on LA Trim Tags.

There are lots of way to determine a Real 1970 Z28. Here are just the big ones. First Big One. Floor Mounted Gas Pedal. Only 70-71 Z28's had these. If the carpet has been replaced sometimes owners went with the conventional camaro set up which switched out very easily. However the remnants from the Floor Mounted Gas Pedal should still be there. Pull up the carpet in the vicinity of the the gas pedal and look for a dip in the floor pan with two balls that screw into the floor. You will see the nuts for them underneath the car.

Secondly a 12 Bolt Rear End. Only Z28's and SS cars got these in 1970. And 1970 was the last year for the 12 Bolt in the Camaro by the way.

These are the 2 Big items to look for so look for them.

Make sure it is a Z28 First and then go from there.

Hope this helps,

Bob R

Bob thanks for all the info it was very helpful and appreciated. I thouht I read somewhere that some Z's in 70 got the Z28.?? stamped on the cowl tag and some just have 28.?? Also one more question did all 70 Z28's have a posi rearend. The one I am looking at has the (COO) 4.10 rear end.

Thanks again

Ryan,

Yes, all 70 Z28's has a posi rearend as well as all 71 to 74 Z28's.

I heard the same thing you did that some Norwood 70 Z28's had Z28 on the Trim Tag. In all honesty I have never seen one. All the Norwood 70 cars I have seen all said 28.10 or 28.19. Go to those links I posted up above and do some reading. Lot's of information on this site as well as Gary's.

Ryan,

My '70 is a Norwood car & IS stamped Z28. Bob's right, figure out if it's a Z first & go from there. Also, make sure it's a '70! There are some things that came exclusively on the '70 , like the adjustable headrest's & the black radio knobs (if it still has the original radio). Check out the links like he said, there's a ton of info.

Good luck http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
