View Full Version : Where's all the TOYS gone???
Z-28COVERCAR 04-01-2011, 09:53:35 AM Since joining this site, you guys have really got my interest BACK to ALL 2nd gen stuff. So for the past few years I've been collecting any and all 2nd gen diecast and 1:64 scale HotWheels,ProRodz,JonnyLightning,BigTimeMuscle or MatchBox. I regularly visit Walmart,Target & Toy-R-Us and for the last 2 to 3 years they have NOTHING for the second gen series.
Everything has dried up at our local toy stores.
WTF happened???
Even this collectable thread has been reduced to 2 to 3 topics every time I log on.
cadmanmeg 04-01-2011, 12:26:25 PM Has been a shift with the economy. Most of the good stuff I grab nowadays comes from online forums, local dealers, and toy shows/conventions. I do still find good stuff at the store, but not weekly. Some stores like ToyRus are really weak with any new stuff and the Camaro stuff sometimes tends to get picked up by employees trying to resale or the door rushers.
Yeah, it would be cool to see more activity here. Not sure what else to spark it. For me though, since collecting diecast is also a huge hobby for me (collect Ferrari's and a few other castings too), I also tend to frequent other forums specific to diecast. I for one would be willing to contribute a lot more here and more folks here would get more active. Heck, my Camaro assortment runs about 1800+ cars from all years, manufacturers, and scales. Also grab old advertising, brochures, models, etc... Guess you could say that I am building a museum...LOL.
delete-Z 04-01-2011, 09:30:28 PM I also have a large collection of second gen camaro diecast,models,books,pictures,posters & R/C cars!
second gen is my gen!
B.M. 04-02-2011, 10:11:40 AM I just started getting into the die cast cars, picked up a set from the swap meet section.I went to walmart last night to get some of those little plastic cases, and found a 70 camaro,i'll have to look i cant remember if it's hot wheels or matchbox, but it's a replica of a 70 camaro race car,it's pretty cool.
cadmanmeg 04-06-2011, 02:34:12 AM Funny and weird that there are no further comments on this thread.....
ls777z 04-06-2011, 09:18:07 AM I used to buy pretty much any Camaro's I could find. Then it got to the point of how much more $$$ do I want to spend. Now, 2 tax exemptions later, pretty much all of my stuff is in boxes in the storage room. I was allowed to keep one barrister bookcase with some of them, not neccesarily the most valuable, but ones I like. Every once in awhile I will go through the boxes and say "gee, I forgot I had that".
Kamikaze 04-06-2011, 10:51:07 AM I started collecting back in the 60's and have a modest collection. I stopped buying anything I saw when I realized space was becoming a problem. Even with most of my collection boxed up and put away, what is the point if you can't display them? Adding to that when you have clean and wax them all the time, I slowed down and started to put low time and money into my home and cars.
Life just changed priorities so with economics, I can see why others may not be real active in this section...
Philly 04-11-2011, 07:58:01 PM I started collecting them too...Big time muscle are nice or whatevr i an get my hands on. I buy my buddy a vette every x mas and he buys me a camaro but this year is the 1st year i got the one i really wanted...A 2ND GEN!
John w/2 Z's 04-12-2011, 12:43:31 PM Don't know if it seems the same way around you all but diecast cars have been slowly dieing out for a little while now. There are very few brands out in stores now.Hotwheels is about the only main stay, especially with Camaros. You pretty much have to branch out to other cities to find anything new. Also online stores are the way to go now.

Vsolo 05-13-2011, 09:32:12 PM The new toy laws have killed the diecast industry lead based toys are banned most diecast have small traces of lead so grab them while you can. Errr do you have a link to back up this statement. I can't find anything about it
thor3228 05-18-2011, 08:11:10 AM I found out about it from a friend in the motorcycle business,There is a new law banning motorcycles and atv's for kids under 12 due to the lead used in the casting process and electrical solder joints,Which led to a ban on imports of cast toys and almost everything that has come into contact with anything lead,Which is anything from China made for kids.
Dalek Sec 05-19-2011, 02:03:38 AM It has been my experience that, every time I pick up a neat car, the Matchbox etc, toys, vanish from the shelves. It makes me wonder, why one can find a Matchbox VW Golf (What kid dreams of owning a Golf, honestly?) but not a 2nd Gen Cam or a 3rd Gen Firebird.

thats all well and good for ppl that own a 70-73 but what about the rest of us?
Z-28COVERCAR 05-21-2011, 09:55:46 PM Well I made the original post on this thread and still to this day I specifically LOOK for only 2nd gen Camaros. Results = NONE in the SoCal areas.
Toys-R-Us, Target, Walmart and the rest of the name brand retail stores.
ls777z 05-22-2011, 06:46:58 AM I started sorting through my stuff and first generations are the more common. Fifth generation seems to be picking up a lot, probably due to media exposure, ie. Transformers" movie. The second generation are few and far between...
John w/2 Z's 05-24-2011, 11:32:36 PM Only 2nd gen that I've seen done lately was by matchbox in a 5 pack,a purple '70 Z28.As far as 78-81s Hotwheels seems to be the only one to doing any.
John w/2 Z's 05-24-2011, 11:35:44 PM or a 3rd Gen Firebird.Johnny Lightning and Greenlight has done some 3rd gen T/As lately.
cadmanmeg 06-02-2011, 01:56:19 AM The old Johnny Lightnings were awesome with the early an late 2nd gens. Of course you cannot get those in stores anymore.
Dalek Sec 06-06-2011, 05:35:31 PM Not sure if this is of interest to any here BUT, I found the listing on CL and thought of you guys.
