Usually find this on the rear of the engine. Need the complete cast number for the head info, date code would help too. Something like a D231. 76'maro 09-18-2001, 11:21:00 PM "-882" heads are fairly common 70's smog heads...I don't have my books out to give you production info, though. They are generally regarded as pretty good flowing heads for smog heads, which means they are only marginally better than other heads! They also have a reputation for cracking across the valve seats if they are overheated. I have overheated them before and never had this problem. 1.92/1.50 valves. For some comparison info on these vs other heads (GM and aftermarket) there is some info at: http://www.nastyz28.com/2gcog/cylhead.html For more info such as casting run dates, applications etc try Mortec: http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm Blocks are listed first, Heads are listed at the bottom (and also crank numbers pages etc.,, a lot of info) Also if you can see the block stamping pad (in front of the passengers side head) with the prefix/suffix you can get some info on the original application, HP ratings etc at http://www.nastyz28.com/spmenu.html I personally have never seen a 3970010 block that had 010/020 in the back of the block that did not also have both the 010/020 cast into the area under the timing chain. I bet if you look farther you will find the 020 is also under the 010. This represents the amount of tin and nickle used in the material the block was cast from. The best production blocks are 010/020,, ALL 3970010 blocks are at least 10% (010) so even if the 020 is not present,, it is a good casting and capable of holding together at very high horsepower levels. May be a 4bolt may not,, only pulling the pan will tell for sure there. BTW, the 010/020 is the same formula they use for the GMPP "Bowtie" blocks. Oh,, the E177 in the casting # area,, that's the date code for the casting E= May,(A=Jan, B=Feb etc). Next two numbers are the day of the month= 17th, The last number (7) represents the year. You have to do some thinking and research,,, but with the 3970010 block only running from 1969-1980,, this block was cast May 17th, 1977. Just for giggles some blocks even have a casting clock and you can decode it right down to the hour of the day the block was 'born' into the GM family. Pretty cool eh! ------------------ ^- Hill?? what hill?? I never saw no hill!! jb 09-19-2001, 01:50:00 PM it is a 4 bolt main i already pulled the pan to confirm that its a 383. |
