Need a little help here...

I just picked my '79 T/A W6 posi rear end with disk brakes and I'm trying to comfirm the ratio.

Passenger side housing: C or G 2, so that's either Buffalo or Detroit 2nd shift? GM32, so that's a 3:42 ?

Drivers side: date code 8810 ? Part/Serial #1254333 ?

I didn't find any numbers on the passenger side axle tube...even after wire brushing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Peter,

According to the 2nd Gen Trans Am page, the 3:42 was not available that year. Depending on the engine offered, most came with the 2:41. 2:56, 2:73 or 3:08. Only the TA with the 400 came with the 3:23 as standard. All came with posi.

79ZED;

Nice to have have Canuck chime in for a change (Don't get offended, I was born in Nova Scotia...now live in Atlanta,GA). Please point me in the direction of the page you we're referring to...the VIN # off the T/A should be heading my way shortly...

Thanks...

Peter,

Nova Scotia? Wow, they must love your accent in Atlanta!

Here is the URL:

You could also do a web search, there is a lot of TA info out there.

Dang that was fast..

Actually, moved to California when I was 4, moved to Atlanta in 1993 (notice I didn't mention what year when I was 4). 90% percent of my family is still North of the boarder...and, those of us south, still own land North...it never leaves the heart!

Thanks for the link...I appreciate it

You can figure out the ratio yourself by turning the axles at the same time, and counting the turns of the yoke, until you have spun the wheels one complete revolution. For axample, a 3.42 would have the yoke turn just short of 3.5 times. If it were just past 3 turns it would be 3.08 and if between that, 3.23. If both wheels turn together you have posi and if they don't either you don't or the posi is blown.
