i was pretty sure of that much but is there a way to tell the year or origins of this axle?

Look on the back side of the housing, on the re-inforcing webs . They are right under the area where the cover bolts on. There are dates cast in the housings right here, on the driver's side (I think) . You may have to pressure wash the crud off to see them.

do you mean right underneath it or on the rear face? i cant seem to find it
