Hello,
A co-worker has heard me talking about the site lately and how much help everyone has been. He came up to me last night and asked if I would help him indentify an engine he has. The code is FO43OHC and he's not sure about the displacement.
Thanks for your help,

Several variations of the 327 and 350 engines in the 60's used the HC assembly code. Most were of low-horse/auto trans. A casting number and casting date would be helpful in narrowing it down.

Chris,
I don't know if this will help but it's in a '66 Impala right now and the car has a four speed in it. I'll try to find a casting number but I don't know how lucky I'll be in finding one with the engine in the car still.
Thanks,

The code HC was used in 65,66,67 and 68 passenger car 327 with a powerglide.

I got the code from behind the driver'd side head. It was 3782870 and according to Mad Mike's site that makes it a 327 with between 250 and 375 horsepower. So that leads to the question of how to determine what horsepower rating this engine had. Is there another code to look up?
Both ChrisS and 70RS327 research say it should have an powerglide but it has a 4-speed. The guy that owns it now has had it for almost 5 years and he says that he hasn't changed a thing. Maybe it has had an enigine swap in the distant past? It's just wierd that the block was manufactured in the same time frame that the original would have been built also.
Thanks for your help,

Casting number 3782870 was a 327 used 1962-1965, which answers the original question of displacement. My info sources are very limited for pre-1964 but the HC assembly code in 1965 was used in "passenger" (Biscayne, Bel Air, Impala, etc.) 327 cu. in./250 horsepower, 4 bbl., Powerglide.
It's possible this code was used on prior years as well. I'll do a little more checking on earlier years if no one else follows up on this post.
Casting date should be on opposite (passenger) side of block near the bellhousing. This will surely narrow it down.
