I finally got my engine the other day.. Guy dropped it off.. I'm so happy. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif This is going to be my first rebuild, so I was wondering about some input on this engine?
Could anyone decode it for me so I can have a rough idea what I have..?
Here goes..
Very Back of Block- H11 010
509 020

Left Side of Block- 010
020
148

Under Left Head on Back of Block- 3970010
G 18

Under Right Head on Front of block- CE44 21

On Cylinder Head- J135
333882
GM 21 27

As far as I know the engine is out of a 76 vette, it has Rocker Stud Girdles, Alum intake and a Windage tray..
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

id bet on it being a L48 not knowing the #'s.

i do know the heads are the 1.94/1.50 76cc heads. good but they need ported.

Are they 1.94 heads? Guy told me they were 2.02 factory heads that came with that engine. This maybe a dumb question but i'm a first time builder.. How can I check for sure?
I'm not doubting you..but is there a way to measure and how?

pull the head and measure the valves. think the guy is probbaly full of shit. the 882 heads are smog 76cc 1.94 heads.... i got 2 sets of them.

Sorry Nitro, I looked up the casting number's myself and they most definitely are 1.94's. Save yourself the time pulling and measuring the valves.

Block G18? No year present is July 18, Probably 1975 since the heads are J135 meaning October 13, 1975. Engine was more that likely destined for a 1976 model.

Thanks for all your help guys!! I pulled the heads to check, sure enough 1.94s.. Oh well
it wasn't a total loss, The block is pretty good with a nice set of Flattops. I'll just have to have a look for some 2.02 or equivalent heads. Can I get just as much HP
if I have them ported or should I keep looking?

buy the $30-40 home porting kit and a book from summit, port the f**k out of those heads. if you screw em up, hey you can look for 2.02's if you do it right you got a nice set of heads to use.

Thanks Patgizz! I will do that.. No harm in trying way. Like you said I could always look for some 2.02 later. I have another question though? Did those heads come with Rocker stud girdles from the factory? Or did some one put them on afterward? Thanks for your help guys http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
