I bought a 70 RS 350 back in march but I haven't been back to play with it yet. My question is...where there any 8.5 inch ten bolts intalled the 70 model year? Everything I have read says they weren't offered until 71 but my friend back home swears that I have the 8. rather then the 8. 2. Does this mean someone installed a new rear end or did it come from the factory?

Don't know for sure, but when I threw the driveshaft out of my 1970RS I figured I'd get smart and put my 1980 Z28 drive shaft in the car to keep it going. The 80Z28 (8.5") didn't fit... too big. Of course, this was due to the u-joints, but the assumption I made is the 8.2 uses slightly smaller u-joints than the 8.5 would.

I'd say you have the 8.2" 10 bolt, since the 8.5 debuted in 1971.

Any suggestions for doner cars. I am going to need an 8.5 or a 12 bolt. I am looking to save money here so any help would be appreciated.

When I bought my 70RS, I was also concerned about the 10 bolt in mine. It was for sure an 8.5. I then checked the codes on the axle tube and found an original 8.5, 3.08 geared posi from a 1975 Camaro. I pulled it and put in the 9". I recently sold it for $250. Someone had tossed the 8.2 at some point in favor of the 8.5.

All 1970 Camaros that came with a 10-bolt were 8.2 10-bolts. You need to find a 12 bolt from an early 2nd Gen, or any 8.5 10-bolt from any 71-81 F-body. If you want disc brakes in the rear, look for a mid 70's Trans-Am rear. Most of these can be had with posi and decent gearing for street use.

I think the second generation f-bodys had a wider rear wheel track than the first, so be careful I am not sure a first to second swap of rears is 100%.

You are correct, I meant 2nd Gen, so I corrected it above.
