I have a 72 ss-396 with an eng. production date aug.23 and a body date 4th week of september. The vin# is in the low 14,000. Was it manufactured in 71 or 72?

In 1972, Chevy was producing the Camaro at the Norwood plant only, so production numbers were quite high on a per month basis for that plant.
Norwood reached 16,358 cars by the end of Sept 1971 on their production run of 1972 Camaros.
Your production number in the 14,000 would be correct for the end of Sept 1971.
