Need help in decoding the little metal tag on a muncie 4sp. The trans was made for a 1972. The tag reads as follows: 6271517WJ. I have found the numbers for '69 & '70 Camaros in the assembly manuals. If someone has a '72 manual you may find it in the m20 section.Thanks.

6271517 should be the GM part number for this tranny.
WJ is the code that goes with this part number. The "WJ" is the number that should show up in the "transmission" block of the build sheet.
I believe that the metal tags were just identification tags for the assembly process.

Thanks Gary S
The trans only has a date code as follows:
P2S10C.
It has no vin stamp. The only other identifier is the metal tag. It would be nice to find out what the application was.

Like you, I would like to find out the applications that go with these tag numbers.
As you already know, the 69 and 70 assembly manuals give these numbers and their applications. But, for some reason, Chevy decided to not to include it in all of the later assembly manuals. I checked a 71 manual, and could not find the list in that one. I don't have a 72, so I can't help you with a 72.
The P2S10C says it is a 1972 built tranny as you already know. The "C" says it is a M22. The "S" seems strange to me. This should indicate month, and "S" would indicate a very late month. I'd have to check more on that one.

I have a friend with the same exact WJ code M-22, and he says it is from a 'Vette. The serial # on his tranny is a St.Louis car, hence the decode of the 'Vette transmission.
