I don't know why I care because I am stripping the car for racing but I have a 71 camaro and I wish to know what it was. If you dont feel like decoding for me maybe you could help find a place that can help me? Thanks in advance.

Here is the VIN:

124871L520853

Also the trim tag where z27 or whatever would be has this #?

961059 060475

what does this mean. Please dont refer me to this site becasue it doesnt seem to cover anything useful unless it's a SS or Z28.

from what i see, nobody knows what it is.

the deal with unknowns is, GM didnt keep records of all the #'s, some just werent important or they didnt keep the records long enough to tell what they are. its like trying to find out how many 71 z28's with the RS option were made with AC, deluxe interior, and baby shit green paint. those #'s we will probably never know, so just make something up http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif maybe that "961059" now stands for "blown rat"

BigBlown, Hopefully I can shed some light on your Trim Tag information. The first thing I want to ask you is that is this the original Trim Tag? Based on what you have provided here is what I think these numbers may mean.

961059 could possibly be last minute changes to be made to the body by the Fisher Body assembly line workers prior to the car going down to the Chevrolet Driveline Line. If you notice they are even meaning 6 numbers for possibly 3 changes.

Pat was off to a good start with 06 being the month the car was built. 04 would be the last week of June. The 75 would or could be a change to a paint code or the paint code itself Cranberry Red.

One point I do want to make here is June is usually the last month of production for a model year like your 1971. So the interesting thing here is that you may have one of the last 1971 Camaro's made at the Los Angeles Plant in the 1971 model year. So that itself my be the reason for the unique codes on the plate.

If you figure it out please post it.

mrfomoco - You may want to post this in the Original Drivetrain section when you get the VIN and trim tag info from the car.

Welcome to the board! I'm up the road from you at times (I have a house in Gardiner)....

ZERO, I know that, everyone should know they DID NOT make a 71 Z28 with a/c (70 or 72 either, 67-69 too)

961059 060475 is what is called the DP SEQ NO (Data Processing Sequence Number) the was used in all GMAD plants. It was located on each build sheet in Box 24. The broadcast system linked together all production departments throughout the facility, assuring that the correct parts and accessories for a given car will arrive at the proper place at exactly the right time.

They put this on the body tag so as the be able to identify the body when it came time for the Body Bank to release it to the final lines for assembly. They would enter this and the body number into the broadcast system. The system would cross reference back to the dealer order, generate the VIN and all the specifications for that vehicle and broadcast that info to all work stations in the plant via teletype where build sheets would be printed out for each car. All the sub-depts would fabricate all components needed and convey them to the final line to meet up with the car at the precise moment it arrived at the assembly station.

The Body plate (cowl Tag) was created a day ahead of time in the Scheduling Department in the front office, where they created the "run sheet" for the Body Shop, and they were taken out to the Body Shop in steel trays, arranged in "run sheet" sequence, and installed on the cowl at the end of the body framing line where the raw shell was welded together. So when someone says the car was build on X day, it did not happen that fast. It normally took 2-3 days for a car to process thru the system from the welding up of the body to the release to the shipper. The generally referred to Target Production Weeks (TPW) as when a car was scheduled.
