View Full Version : build sheet discrepancies
djw 03-12-2011, 04:12:17 PM I recently removed the gas tank in order paint things and found what I thought was the build sheet for this car; HOWEVER, the vin numbers on the sheet and the car dash do not match
The dash tag says I have a Z28 but the build sheet is for a Berlinetta--- BUT...the build sequence number is off by one digit e.g. .100xx3 vs 100xx4--mine is the later number
Everything I have seen until now tells me that the car is original and has never been messed with
What are the chances that the build sheet I found is really for the previous built car?
Has anyone ever seen this kind of thing?
P.S. the car is an 81
ATM 03-12-2011, 04:44:20 PM From what I have read, it was not uncommon for the workers to stuff a build sheet from another car into a car.
djw 03-12-2011, 04:45:59 PM Is the id number stamped anywhere ont body or subframe for the 81?
71zz430 03-12-2011, 04:46:54 PM I've owned two Camaros that had the build sheet for another car just a few numbers away. Not uncommon at all from my experience. It sure is a disappointment when you realize the build sheet you found is not actually for your car.
Gary S 03-12-2011, 08:44:55 PM Build sheets were trash once the car was assembled, so lots of them ended up stuck inside a car somewhere just to dispose of them, and often not in the right car.
I once found a 70 Monte Carlo build sheet hidden in the rear seat of a Camaro. Both cars were built at Van Nuys on the same day.
blakestree 03-12-2011, 08:49:55 PM Out of curiosity, which plant is your car from, djw?
79powershifter 03-12-2011, 09:48:44 PM Post up some info. Maybe someone here has the car to match the build sheet you found. Would'nt THAT be cool!!!
falloutboy 03-13-2011, 11:48:59 AM speaking of poor and lazy labor :)
twozs 03-13-2011, 12:51:11 PM ^what does that mean . their job wasn't to make sure some guy 30 plus years later gets a build sheet for his car , it was to build the car. the line worker could care less about a build sheet after his job on the car was done . at 500 cars a shift it got a little busy . mostly they ended up in the garbage, how is that poor and lazy labor ?
falloutboy 03-13-2011, 01:18:32 PM Well I thought these belonged to the cars - and should be a prove of the manufaturing process.
If they werent intendet for this, I was completely wrong and misunderstood the whole deal.
As I think of it, I never heard of these buildsheets in German cars, so it is probably a cool thing the Americans did, yet again.
twozs 03-13-2011, 03:44:57 PM all cars need some sort of reference guide during the assembly process ( unless all cars are exactly the same) they were assembly line reference tools for the workers to put the right parts , paint , and options on the car . they were also used by the inspectors to make sure everything was correct. some inspectors trashed them some didn't . after the car was done their was no need for them . as in the norwood assembly plant the were discarded . these cars were mass produced by the thousands and no one thought much about collecting them in the days when they were new .
Z-WIZZ 03-13-2011, 03:57:12 PM ive even heard somewhere of firebird b/s in a camaro

your right, makes complete sense.
I seem to tend to forgot the sheer mass of cars produced. (Compared to German manufacturers :p )
So please pardon my comment.
djw 03-14-2011, 10:28:15 AM Sure is strange how things change.
Kind of makes you wonder how the things we do now will affect things
years from now.

gatorraidr 03-15-2011, 07:38:46 AM if you look under the hood, behind the heater, a/c box the vin is stamped in the fire wall. that'll tell you if some one messed with the vin tag.
