View Full Version : New Toy for X-Mas
BTTB71SS 12-23-2010, 07:59:52 PM Well i went and picked up my new toy for X-Mas yesterday. It is a 4x4x6 powder-coat oven. This thing is huge and weighs over 800lbs :(. Took a lot to get it out of the trailer and in place. Also i had to rearrange my entire garage because it wouldn't go where I wanted it to because of the height of it.

Also I built a powder coating booth so i don't get powder all over the garage. The middle shelf in the booth area can be removed for longer pieces.

Kamikaze 12-23-2010, 08:39:15 PM WOW! Bet that was an investment!
So you gonna take on other people's parts to coat?
Chevrolaine 12-23-2010, 08:53:59 PM Dang, that's looks heavy!
Time to start pumping out some purdy stuff soon??
High Country Z 12-23-2010, 08:58:42 PM Please put the cover back on your circuit breaker box, it's making me nervous.
BTTB71SS 12-23-2010, 09:33:47 PM Kamikaze - Yep I will be doing this as a new business since i got laid off in June after 25 yrs in the IT field.
Laine - Yep purdy stuff will be coming soon
High Country Z - I will put the cover back on once i get the wiring run for the oven
ATM 12-23-2010, 09:36:03 PM The oven looks awesome. Good luck on straightening out the Garage. There is just nothing like a total re-arrange to throw you for a loop.

I swear I think I do that about once a year
Chevrolaine 12-24-2010, 12:51:28 AM High Country Z - I will put the cover back on once i get the wiring run for the oven
I presume The Northern Lights will no longer exist once you throw the switch to that monster?!
BTTB71SS 12-24-2010, 07:16:56 AM I presume The Northern Lights will no longer exist once you throw the switch to that monster?!
Yep they will probably disappear. Thing draws 70amps and gets to 700 degrees talk about a beast;)
pkjeep 12-24-2010, 08:09:49 AM Merry Christmas BTTB - because this is all you are getting - well and a bunch of other stuff - but this was enough!
Now lets start making money instead of spending and de-mantling the garage. What he did not tell every one he has been "Cleaning" the garage for 4 weeks NOW!!! Then this little oven comes in and he comes up and says he has to start over!
So who is going to come over and actually get this garage ready to go? Oh yea and in May we have decided to try and sell the house - so be ready - I think we are going to need help moving ovens, cars, and lots of equipment if this sucker sells!
Beer and food will be provided!

BTTB71SS 12-24-2010, 09:58:03 AM It might be a great way to make some money on the side.
I have been unemployed since June after being laid off after 25yrs in the IT field with the same company. I decided to take another route and start my own business since i was tired of working for corporate America and them off-shoring all their tech support.
So that is why the I purchased the oven and already have a couple of people lined up for powder coating from the forums.;). I have done small stuff in the past with a smaller oven but needed to go bigger....
I powder-coated parts for son's computer ;) early this year.
I have my wife's support on this so that helps.
green 1977 12-24-2010, 10:22:24 AM Harry I could have one big Pizza Party ;)

clay taylor 12-24-2010, 01:02:15 PM I hope business booms for you. I admire anyone who starts their own business. There is a powder coat that will live on headers?
rgearhead 12-24-2010, 05:18:02 PM Sigh!! both my babies are under the weather, 1 was up puking half the night, and the other has an ear infection as of today, so were staying put for the night (not going to my cousins) I'm in the basement/garage trying, stress trying to organize from this summers rehab' i have buckets and tubs full of tools and building supplys every where...
then i thought of the pic of your garage Rick, I just wanted to tell you Menard's has all free standing shelving units on sale (at-least here) till Jan2nd ... all metal and polly units i just picked up a 5 shelf Polly unit today and will most likely grab another next week...

BTTB71SS 12-24-2010, 09:11:08 PM Smart move harry
68400BIRD 12-27-2010, 12:38:09 PM Nice pictures of the oven. The only way it could be better is if it had some of my parts in it. LOL I'll be home in a couple of weeks. If the house sells I will be over to help you move.
BTTB71SS 01-09-2011, 12:04:55 PM Here are some pic's of my crude rack I made with whatever I had for steel around the garage. Total investment $17 for casters.
All sections are removable as well as the cross bars for each section.

http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy282/BTTB71SS-1/100_3940.jpg
I have a few parts ready for powder coating and will do them next :)
Marks71BB 01-09-2011, 02:15:13 PM Excellent job on the rack, very universal, I like it.
Remember to fill the oven for maximum profit.
will them casters survive the heat Rick?
Header look great!
BTTB71SS 01-09-2011, 02:22:41 PM Mark they should survive the heat since they are cast iron ;) ... no plastic involved. Also one header came out great the other not so great so now i have to decide if I will strip them and go with ceramic powder on them ;)
K5JMP 01-09-2011, 02:31:31 PM Rick, I wish I had the coin to get ya to coat my sidepipes.. but just not in the cards for now.
Good luck on the coating business. Seems like you could stand to get a good run of luck for a change.

Well if ever decide to have it done let me know... We can figure something out. I have to get my prices figured out such as in stripping/cleaning the parts for powder coating and then powder coat. But i will cut deals to Nasty members ;)
green 1977 01-09-2011, 09:09:26 PM Never thought I would say this to you... But.....
Nice Rack, Rick

I've got an old set of MT valve covers where some of the original paint is pealing. What would it cost to make them look like this again?
https://www.dragtimes.com/images-classifieds-large/Chevrolet-BBC-Mickey-Thompson-Valve-Covers-396-427-454--for-sale_250728561936.jpg
I also have a set of these,
https://www.performanceonline.com.au/images/T/xctmpd7LC4P.png
that I'd like to have look like this:
http://www.ansenusa.com/images/110-8003%20-%20Pontiac%20with%20Logo%20-%20Black%20Pair%20Big.png
I'm building a stroked 400 (assuming 30 over, will be a 461) for my '64 GTO and considering replacing my stock valve covers http://www.am-autoimages.com/partimage/EVC/AM-18211458/main.JPGwith one of the two above.
I'd consider doing both sets - just because then I'd could use one set and use the other as wall art in my shop. Possibly even change them from time to time to give a different look.
No huge rush - as long as they were done by the end of March. I probably will have other parts to PC for the engine compartment also.
I've got powder coaters close to me here in Southern MN - but I'd gladly invest a tank of gas to help you get your new business off the ground.

spons 01-17-2011, 11:05:43 AM I have a bunch of small parts (30+), control arms, and spindles that I'd like to send to you.
Here's a place that has a price menu online. The prices seem very reasonable, but do not include any surface prep like cleaning or blasting.

I have researched the prices of many companies. It is surprising that many do not offer to include sandblasting of the parts in their prices for a good coating unless it is an extra cost.
I will have a price list soon so you all know what it will cost. It will include blasting of the parts ;)
I would be happy to help you out on your powdering coating.
Thanks,
Rick
