Hi, I just happend to find some affordable SAE tools, here in Germany.

But now I need your help to evaluate if these are good tools.

The most important tool is a coil spring compressor that looks like the ones you get at NPD,CI and so on.
Measurements are in cm (metric)

Sizes: 0,028“-0,035“-0,050“-1/16“-5/64“-
3/32“-7/64“-1/8“-9/64“-5/32“-3/16“-
7/32“-1/4“-5/16“-3/8“

I have about a week to decide if I keep this stuff or not.
So tell me, are these gonna be useful, or may they come in handy during Engine, Transmission, suspension work??

Thanks for all the advices.

YOU need to join www.garagejournal.com MANY more expereinced tool junkies over there.

Threadfiles are for cleaning out or straightening damaged threads on a fastener with that given size thread.

The screw pitch gauges confirms what size (or pitch) thread count a given fastener is.

thanks for the fast reply.

Are u a member there I can refer to?

are these sizes common on '79 Camaros?

The pitch gauge says Withworth - but as far is I know SAE uses another kind of thread / pitch (thats what wiki says)
Or should this also work?

Whitworth is totally British, 55 degree thread, versus the American 60 degree thread.

Keep the flare wrenches, they are geat for brake line, power steering, etc. work.

and they can double as a normal wrench also

Damn I knew it. So the gauge is totally useless.

What about this Summit goody?

Unfortunately, in 1979, GM in their infinate wisdom put some metric fasteners along with fractional fasteners on their vehicles which means that you must be VERY careful not to mix them up or you can ruin a perfectly good part.

I'm not very good a telling metric fasteners at all.

I can give you some of the fractional fasteners and the wrenches that fit them.

1/4" X 20 bolt usually takes a 3/8" wrench

5/16 X 18 bolt usually takes a 7/16" wrench

3/8" X 16 bolt usually takes a 9/16" wrench

7/16" X 14 bolt usually takes a 5/8" wrench

1/2" X 13 bolt usually takes a 3/4" wrench

There are exceptions to all of the above. EX: cylinder head exhaust manifold bolts are 3/8" X 16 BUT if you have headers the bolts don't usually take a 9/16" wrench because it wouldn't fit so they heads of the bolts usually take 7/16" or 3/8" wrench.

The hex key wrench sets look like they're pretty complete since they have both fractional and metric sizes in them.
