View Full Version : MR. FBDY's Garage addition.
MR. FBDY 11-16-2010, 11:20:27 AM I guess it is my turn to post up in the garage section of this site now that I am building an addition to my house off the existing garage.
After a couple years of saving up extra cash and a loan off my retirement, it is time to break ground.
The size will end up being a 24’ x 26’ with 9’ walls so I can put a lift inside it.
Tearing up the current driveway.

Mr Big Nasty 11-16-2010, 11:51:33 AM Very nice.
Jas0n 11-16-2010, 11:58:57 AM WOW! You'll have a great time in there! :D
rustover 11-18-2010, 03:36:06 PM Looking forward to seeing the progress. It looks like it's off to a great start.
MR. FBDY 11-19-2010, 04:47:00 PM I have some more updates to load up when I get home. The walls are up and we are waiting for the trusses to be delivered. Should be Tuesday. The concrete guy is suppose to come and pour the slab on Monday, so if this happens, we will be back on schedule and close to enclosing it by Turkey day.
Rene Melten 11-19-2010, 04:57:39 PM Nice work. The only thing I wish I had installed just outside my door is an area drain, just piped to a rock pit, something simple. Would be handy when washing the car etc.

Matt T 11-24-2010, 01:59:51 PM Looking good!
Stupid question: why do the first two trusses you have up look like rough cut--full 2" or better thickness--but the stack waiting to go up looks like std size?
Marks71BB 11-24-2010, 02:27:42 PM scissor trusses good call for added overhead clearance, I did the same with my shop. Looking like progress!
rustover 11-24-2010, 11:06:53 PM The progress is looking great. You will love the scissor trusses. :bowtie:
MR. FBDY 11-25-2010, 11:36:37 AM The progress is looking great. You will love the scissor trusses. :bowtie:
Yeah, I am loving them already. Now that they are up, I got some measurements for my 4 post lift.

Here is some progress pics from yesterday. I am giving my neighbor Turkey day off, but we will resume on Saturday to get the plywood laid down an enclose the roof.

Keizer 11-25-2010, 12:11:30 PM That's a good looking addition. I think the step up roof design goes well with the existing house, and doesn't give a monotonous long look to the overall package.
What are you going to do inside as far as the front gable existing garage door wall? Are you closing that off and making the old garage space living space? Or tearing that wall out for a large garage space?

For now I plan to use the existing garage as the place where I assemble the cars I am building. The new garage will have the lift in it next year and I will store 2 cars in the new part and assemble in the old part. A couple years down the road I may turn the existing garage into a family/entertainment room and I will have the new garage dedicated to the working on them and my 4 car will have the done cars in it. This is all pending I sell off a couple camaros in the next couple years to free up a couple spaces.
Paul1979 11-29-2010, 03:29:50 PM Looks excellent. Should add to the value of your home as well.
leafs_11 12-08-2010, 04:16:37 PM if its gonna be a workshop put styrafoam under the concrete floor.

MR. FBDY 01-10-2011, 12:06:33 PM if its gonna be a workshop put styrafoam under the concrete floor.
It is a little late for me to do this now, but I have to ask, why? What would the styrafoam do?
MR. FBDY 01-10-2011, 12:08:05 PM whats the other car under the cover? sorry,... im nosey when it comes to cars. :bowtie:
It is a 34,000 original mile 1970 camaro. Will be my next project after my BM camaro is done and the Prostreet is sold.
leafs_11 01-12-2011, 10:19:02 AM It is a little late for me to do this now, but I have to ask, why? What would the styrafoam do?
plastic under the floor keeps it from sweating and styrofoam makes it unbelievable warmer on your feet
MR. FBDY 03-29-2012, 09:10:43 PM Been a while since I posted some updates on my new garage. I been working over the winter to get the interior done since there wasnt any vehicles in the way.
I got all the walls and ceiling insulated, boarded and painted.
A tip for you guys doing it by yourself, the drywall hoist is the best investment you could ever make. It lifts and holds the dywall or plywood in place for you until you screw it down.
I bought some signs from Ebay and had some car parts lying around and put some decorations on the walls too.

Type73LT 04-18-2012, 01:20:53 AM Did you keep the old double garage door in place to separate the 2 areas in case you are doing any messy/dusty work?

Like the four post lift :) hell yeah! oh, and the rest of the stuff is kinda cool too
MR. FBDY 04-20-2012, 12:11:46 AM That is one nice looking man cave.
Hey guys, thanks for the compliments. A friend stopped over the other day to see what I was working on and he came up with a good name for my garage instead of Man Cave, he called it man land. I thought that was pretty original.

Yeah, I love the 4 post lift, I want another one. I used it to do the ceiling plywood, it worked well, I just lowered it, rolled it to where I needed it and raised it to get close the the trusses. Thank god there was no cars in the new section and I had room to do it.
MR. FBDY 04-20-2012, 12:17:44 AM Did you keep the old double garage door in place to separate the 2 areas in case you are doing any messy/dusty work?
Yes, I did and exactly for that reason.
