...here is an updated to my project. I started with a pair of these to mount my 6 1/2" Infinity component speakers (which are deceptively large speakers):

They were a bit flimsy, and rather bulky. So, to address the bulkiness of the pods, I cut them down roughly with some tin snips to angle the woofer up towards the sweet spot. The pictures don't really show it well, but they do angle up considerably.

Here is the uncut vs. the cut pod. I took at least another 1/2" off with the die grinder later on (once these were mounted on the base):

Next, to address the flimsiness of the pods, I used the pod as a template for a plywood base. Once the bases were cut out with my scroll saw, I used my die-grinder and a 100 grit sanding disc and contoured the nose to fit into the point of the pod. I cut circles in the base for the magnets - the edge of the magnet is flush with the base of the pod. Then, I mounted the bases to the pods with some construction adhesive and some black interior screws. Finally, I sanded the rough-cut edges of the pods so they were smooth with the plywood base for a perfect level fit to the door panel.
I mounted these to the door panels with screws/washers from the rear of the panel (I had the panels off the car). Then, I hung the door panels after running the wires into the car. I pushed these as far forward on the panels as possible and tried to follow the lines of the panels.
Here is the end product. I just need to angle the tweeters up to suit my taste (they're adjustable) once I get my amps connected:

Please excuse the dust everywhere. I need to clean/vacuum/wash my car:
