Hey guys, I was tightening down my TH350 tranny to the motor when the transmission housing cracked. Can I simply get this welded/repaired or am I dealing with a bigger issue???

not impossible to repair, but it may not be worth it.

my question would be, why did it crack, there should be zero load on that ear when you are tightening it. I'm guessing you didn't have the converter seated... which means you may have damaged the pump putting that much load on it

good point...i made sure the convereter was properly seated though.

i am going to have my buddy repair the crack tomorrow, it does look a lot worse in the pics than in person.

Only one thing that caused the bell housing to crack and that is that the converter wasn't completely seated into the pump. IF you are lucky, it didn't destroy the pump. Most likely it did and, at the minimum, you're headed to a new pump BUT most likely, are going to need a whole new transmission.

I would weld it, then when putting back make sure its fully seated before bolting down. Check for hangups, cables dip stick tube etc that could keep it from seating fully first.

the more i think of it, i think you are right. however, i was 99% sure the converter was seated properly as i have been through this in the past with another car of mine and made sure to have it seat 3 times...

how can i check the pump and/or anything else on the tranny to verify there is not damage? im keeping my fingers crossed that i dont need to get a whole new transmission :(

thanks again guys, i really appreciate the help and insight!

on my friends 700R we pulled the pump and found the pump rotor had broken in 4 pieces, after he tried to draw the trans up with the converter not seated fully. Thank god we took the time to take the pump apart -- needed a new pump rotor

I don't see how this works.
Can you explain the process of installing one of these bell housings to a stock TH350 case.

you remove the stock bell hsg then this ultra bell bolts up to were the pump has attaches to the case .the ultra bell is like a mcleod scattershield is for a manual trans set up .the ultra bell is made to contain the t/converter in the event that it explodes

How do you remove it, cut the front part of the bell housing off?

yep you either use a sawzall or cut off wheel and remove the bellhousing as per the instructions and it looks like this in the pics shown

I just went through this with my 700r4 busted the ear right off. bought another trans, didn't want to take the chance on destroying the converter and cooler as well.

How much is that ultra bell?

I cracked an ear off of my TH350 when I put it on the motor one time, it wasn't aligned on the pins right. I put some JB Weld on the piece, bolted it up and it worked. Did you crack 2 holes? Take it to someone and get it welded, it should be OK.

just a hairline crack along one of the ear holes...i am going to have the tranny inspected today and am possibly looking at a rebuild/beef-up too to support the additional power my stroker will be putting down:)

if you're going to build some serious hp you might want to invest in a ultra bell !!!:)

When the trans is on the dowels and flush against the back of the motor there SHOULD be a gap between the converter tabs and the flexplate. If there is not STOP because the converter is not locked into the front pump. NEVER pull the trans in with the bolts.
