This is the email I sent to Moser:
I am looking into purchasing a rearend upgrade for my 76 Camaro.

"Could you email me info and prices (including shipping) on a complete 12 bolt rearend(s) that will work for my car.

I would like to have 3.73:1 posi setup.
I currently have my stock 10 bolt 8.5 rear with 2.73:1 gears.

I plan to use 17" wheels with Baer 12' disc's on the back. I have a TH350 w/ high performance internals & B&M stage 2 shift kit.

My future motor will have around 475HP+.
I will be installing a Hotchkis rear swaybar 7/8" and 1 1/2" drop leaf springs."

Question:
Would I be better off having my 8.5 10 bolt rebuilt for $1,400 or more, or should I just get a Moser complete 12 bolt for $1,900?
How many ponies can a 12 bolt moser hold?

Thanks,
Hope this pricing will help some of you folks out there.

You should email them and ask them how many ponies it could handle. That way you get the asnwer "straight from the horses mouth". (no pun intended)

Any reason you dont want to run a 9 inch?
They are easy to work on and simple to change out the center section for a gear change if you ever decide to plus no worries about C clips.

If you are going to replace the rear end in your car I would order a Ford 9" instead of the 12 bolt. If you don't like the gears that you are running it is a lot easier to change them out with a 9".

I am debating the same thing. Upgrade my 10 bolt or replace it with a Moser or Currie rear end.

For some reason I haven't given the 9" rear any thought. How much do those run ($$$) with 3.73:1 / posi setup.

I will have to check into a 9" rearend.
Thanks guy's

I purchased the $1900 option which was only $1795 when I got it last year. Went with a 3.42 Eaton and the Performance Rear Cover - this unit DOES NOT have the dreaded c-clips. It's a drop in afair. The 9 inch would also be a good choice but you'll have to make sure the spring purches are installed correctly plus I think the length is a little different - meaning if you want to put hugh 17"'s on the rear, offsets that have been given on this board may not work.

------------------
The Plan:
Merlin 540ci/600hp aluminum heads, Tremec TKO II, Moser 12 bolt, Baer Brakes, PST front end, L-88 hood, complete M&H wiring, Autometer dash, 17" Fikse FM5 wheels.

Taking a $600 car and shooting for mid 11's on the street.

Currently:
Was stripped and now being put back together. ETA - 7/01/04

If you purchase a 9" from Moser or Currie they will probably cost about the same as the 10 or 12 bolt but it is a lot easier to change gears.

What did you price for the 8.5 that was $1400? I added up the prices for a new Eaton posi, 3.42 gears, Moser axles and installation kit and came up with about $900.

Hi Big gear,
I got that figure from you... (one of your posts)
"The way I figure it the cost to completely rebuild the 8.5 is about $1200. How can you get a complete, new 9" for that price?" http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/003011.html .
Then I added $200.00 fluff because you may charge a little less then most places. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

BTW: I plan to have posi setup w/ 3.73:1 gears.

Thanks to all for all your input, it helps alot.

I had added sand blasting and labor to that price for $1200. I just added up the parts for the $900.

i run a bone stock 10 bolt in my 75 running 10's with 4:10s and no prob, it is out of 81 turbo t/a so i have disc brakes and that way if an axle does break it can't get out cause of the rotor and caliper holding it in

just my .02cents

What he said about the rear discs. No need to worry about the c-clip with the rear disc, they will hold the axle. Also, wait to order you wheels until after you install the rear disc. The backspace will be different than with a drum. The rotor is thicker and you will need more backspace. Unless you are running a ton of power and with slicks, a 10 bolt with good components will last a long time. Ask Big gear head.

I feel the need to add something here. I have a friend who raced a car with rear disc brakes and c clips. He broke an axle durring a race and the axle and wheel did come out, and it hit a man standing next to the fence and killed him. Don't rely on the brake caliper to hold the axle in. It isn't designed to do that.
