On level ground (so's the damn car don't roll away), remove the cable and shift the gear selector by hand. See if it will stop the car from rolling. If it doesn't then the parking pawl could be broken inside the transmission. I don't remember if you have to remove the front pump to fix it or not. Definitely will have to remove at least the pan and possibly the valve body. It's been too long since I rebuilt one so I can't recall exactly what's involved. Hopefully it's not the tranny case because that would suck.
By the way if it now holds park then you just need to adjust the shifter cable.

Now that I read this again, I did have this problem with my 79 Grand Prix with a Chevy 350 and a 350 tranny. The stock linkage was used (BOP 200??) and never really lined up. Same thing, in a steep drive way started to roll back while in park, I remember the clicking. I had gotten under it to install a shift kit and had realigned the shifter cable. It worked better after it was aligned.

on mine, i dont know why, but you have to twist the steering column for it to engage in park,or into 1st, you can also manually shift through all the gears like this.

bigheman03, i had this same problem and i found the problem was in the shifter itself... there's a bolt that hold it solid (on the left side of the shifter) and the bolt had come loose/ stripped, so that it would not go all the way into park, then i'd need to use the column. put a nut on the the bolt and you should be golden.
