my 7 blade fan needed replacing and will replace the clutch as well. I ordered a clutch from classic industries today for my 79 but they didn't have the 6 blade fan in stock. The 7 was too much $. My question is the 6 should be fine right? And I know I ordered a clutch already but I'm not sure which one I should get. They said they would take it back w/ no restocking fees. My car originally had A/C and may put it back in one day if that helps. Last night I found a thread that showed pics of 2 diff. clutches but I cant locate that thread again to compare what i have. I can tell you that my clutch does not have the coil spring thingy on it. Just want it to cool with no issues. Also got my new # 438162 rad. as well.... .new 180 stat.....Oh, my fan measures 18 " across from 1 blade to another.....Thnks

I have the Flex-a-Lite 18" 6 blade fan and their heavy duty thermal clutch. I haven't had any cooling issues in the 3 seasons (summer) it's been installed.

ok. the clutch came in today and it is a FL-5555 Flex-a-lite from Classic. I looked it up on Jegs website and it showed it was a Thermal fan. Is that what I should be running?? I'm still not sure about the difference between the two.....Thanks any replys appreciated.....

well the clutch from Classic Ind. wont fit on the fan from Summit...Imagine that !!! I guess I'll be getting your clutch too. Orange71, does your fan have tabs coming out from the center (HUB) of the fan????? Another week the camaro wont be running...

Just looked and yes it does. Seems strange that the flex-a-lite fan would only except a flex-a-lite clutch.

forgot to tell ya the clutch from Classic is a flex-a-lite too # FL-5555. But the "tabs" on the fan wont allow the fan "hub" or center to go thru to be mounted on the clutch.....The strangest thing to me......thanks for the reply and pic!

From the below link: BTW, my clutch from my 77 Z28 that I ordered with A/C does have the coil in the centre.

Thermostatic Fan Clutch - smaller diameter - used with A/C - controlled by engine temperature

Centrifuge Fan Clutch - larger diameter - used without A/C - controlled by engine speed

I feel like a idiot now....I was able to fit the clutch to the fan as I was "talking" on the phone the damn thing just fell together. Guess I had to hold my tongue the right way!

Mark, thanks for the link and pics. That was the thread I was looking for earlier. My clutch is the larger one and has the spring thingy in the center. So thats what makes it a thermal??
