should I be concerned ?
gray smoke, but seems to be pretty excessive.
motor is old, but new to this car.
Running PCV valve to the Quadrajet.
would it be Bad to just put an oil CAP in the hole, instead of a big breather cap ?

.
I don't like my stuff blowing mist. Especially if it has a pcv.
I run all my stuff sealed, but if yours is that worn out it might cause issues.
You are kind of at a catch 22. If you seal it where does the blow by go,
if you don't, you blow mist out. A puke can will help,
but you'll need to drain depending on volume of oil you're moving.

PCV is on the passenger side. breather cap is on the driver's side ... that is obviously the side that I noticed it on.
I am guessing that I will get a lot of oil on the valve cover, since the breather has holes in the bottom.
If I get a different breather with a nipple, I can see how much I catch...
Or could I just run a PCV on both sides, and run one to a can (instead of back in the engine ?
I may just check first to see if one side is worse than the other.
Worst case, am I just looking at valve seals ???

Is it out of the question to run them to the exhaust? I just know my father in laws drag car is like that.

do a compression and leak down test. if you have that much sitting there blowing out with a pcv then your getting a lot of air past something. valve seals won't fix what you have going on, had a buddy come in with a truck one day with the same scenario and wasn't smoking bad out the back and actually ran not too bad.....for an engine with 2 broken pistons.

As I see it, you need to address a couple of things. First, the PCV system needs to be set up properly. Since you are running a PCV valve on one side and a breather on the other, the system is set up properly. You need to have air coming into the engine to replace the air the PCV removes or you will just create a vacuum that doesn't do anything. You cannot run 2 PCV's since they will pull against each other and do nothing. The 2 sides of the engine are connected with various oil passages in the heads and lifter valley, so it is not separate areas that need oil vapor evacuation.
I would guess that your PCV is not doing its job, either not sized properly or else clogged. You can get a stock replacement or many run a PCV from the 69 Z28 (302 engine) in performance applications. Be sure that the breather is not totally soaked with oil either. As for valve covers, I have a set of factory Z28 cast aluminum with 3 holes, one for PCV, one for breather and one for an oil fill cap. The cap is more convenience since you can fill oil through either the PCV hole or the breather hole.
The more serious problem I see is the vapor your engine is making. As others have saik, you really need to see what the cause is and fix it. If the blowby is so great that it is overwhelming the PCV system, it is time to do some diagnostics and find and fix the cause. Good luck.
