View Full Version : Defective tranny? HELP!!!
NoneToPass 11-30-2002, 04:40:00 PM I'm at my wits end with this. NEW Richmond T-10 (2.88 first gear), new TH 400 yoke, new Hayes clutch/PP/TOB, turned flywheel, new Hurst comp shifter. Balanced drive shaft. Less than 1000 miles on the tranny.
It keeps kicking out of third gear. I don't mean "falling" out, I mean kicking out. If you don't hold it in with force it'll throw your hand back. I've adjusted the "old" shifter to hell and back, the new one as well. It's never stopped messing up for third gear. I guarantee 3-4 is adjusted to neutral, shift stops are all the way out to make sure I'm getting all the way into gear. Shifter's 3rd and 4th gear positions put the tranny where it wants to be for those gears (just a tad of overshift possible for 3rd gear).
1,2,4 and reverse work as advertised. I don't know enough about manual internals to even make a guess at anything defective. Next step is to send it back to Richmond (at my expense) so they can check it out.
Any ideas?

Rock'N 11-30-2002, 05:06:00 PM Try www.5speeds.com (http://www.5speeds.com)
They have a form dedicated to each tranny,BW T10,Muncie ect..Under Bulletin Board
Also search 5speeds' archives.

I use German torque... gudentight.
NoneToPass 11-30-2002, 05:18:00 PM Thanks Rock'N but their BB doesn't get much traffic, it's tech articles are thin and the archives are a useless single threaded string of posts. I know, I've already looked. I also sent this post as an email to them.
Thanks anyway,
Kevin

Rock'N 11-30-2002, 07:53:00 PM Yeah they seem pretty Muncie driven too.
Good luck.

TICK 12-12-2003, 05:37:00 PM Did you dial-in the bellhousing?
Joekool 12-12-2003, 08:10:00 PM Drain the oil and look for metal, espicialy bronze colored metal. If a syncro or blocking ring has gone bad than they can cause your symptoms. Some small amounts of metal in the oil are normal but any large chunks are not. Do you hear any noises at all, like humming or whining and does it shift into gear smoothly?
WildBillyT 12-12-2003, 08:33:00 PM Is the shift linkage a set length, or is it adjustable?
Cardinal 12-12-2003, 09:45:00 PM Syncro on third gear is shot. Pull the trans, pull the cover and look at third gear syncor that is on the gear itself. The edges on the syncro must be flat/square not round. It'll pop out of gear if they are round. Unfortunately, the fix is to replace third gear and the brass syncor ring.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Been there, done that!

NoneToPass 12-13-2003, 09:21:00 AM WOW! This post was over a year old and has been resolved. I shipped it back to Richomd Gear and they said it was defective from the factory. Third gear was missing it's taper that would keep it there. They fixed it and sent it back. All is well now.
Thanks folks.
Cardinal 12-13-2003, 11:25:00 PM Glad to hear that another manufacturer stood behind their product and made it right. Estatic that you got your problem fixed. I love it when a plan comes together.
Summit took back and gave me full credit for a Lakewood bellhousing, manual flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and throw out beaing even though it was 3 months beyond their "90 day" policy.
Jegs replaced a Flex-a-Lite VSR fan control no questions asked.
Northern Auto Parts sent a new set of rings for one cylinder at no cost to me after I broke one putting an engine together.
Zoom replace the clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing on a defective 11" B&B clutch assembly when the pressure plate was set wrong (according to them) from the get go (one finger of the three was set too light).
Carhart replaced the zipper on a coat that was one year old at no expense to me. They even gave me back my UPS to them (they requested the receipt be in the package--I thought it was just a formality so they'd have a record of where it came from--had a check for my UPS cost in with the repair receipt!)
Then on the other side of the coin, you have Unlimited (figerglass) Products. Terrible finsish on their products, horrible customer relations, and no help with shipping their crap back if you need to (which you will).
