when i look in summit they say short or long.well i need one for my vega but have no numbers on the old one.advanced showed me one off a mid 80's 350 and the legs were longer then mine, my brother in law has one off a 283 and much shorter then mine. as it is now the back of pump is just about touching timing cover and all my pulleys line up. i can't go longer legged as it will not allow fan/ radiator clearance. is the 283 pump an odd one and i just need what they call short?

Yes. You need the short pump...simple as that. :)

68-earlier was the short water pumps, 69-up was long pump, except for 69-72 pickups were short. Then there is the Corvette short pump used 71 to 82. Here are the lengths per Edelbrock from the block to the hub:

Short - 5-5/8"
Long - 6-15/16"
Corvette short - 5-13/16"

Info came from here http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/water_pumps/high_perf.shtml

I want to say the 283 and 327 engines DID use a slightly different pump.

The V8 Monzas were an oddball. Maybe the shortest one made.

You want a LONG water pump. Shorts cane on vehicles without much room up front such as a vet.

After reading your post mnore carefully, what year is your car? What is not stock?

it is a 75 vega, not much room in there either.

The thing is there is more than one style long legged water pump. Then '69-71 (I might be off one year on the ending date) has longer legs than the one that comes after but, and this is the important bit, the overall length is the same. GM made up the difference is the snout. So the '69-71 style sits farther off the timing chain cover than the later ones leaving more room for things like fuel lines to pass. also, there are two different alternator brackets to mesh with each pump.

CBTN calls out casting number 354495 as the application for a '75 Monza with 262 CID/110 HP. I've had pretty good luck going to Carquest affliates and asking for a reman'd pump for the year and model car I'm working on - one tends to get the correct pump rather than an acceptable service part which may or may not be an exact fit.

That is the casting number which is not always the same as the part number - but it should allow you to check the part at the counter to see if it is what you want. I would think the 'Vette water pump is as short or maybe even shorter still so that may work also.
