View Full Version : Passenger tailpipe smokes white at idle
Chevy 350 03-23-2010, 11:00:36 PM What are the causes of white smoke coming out of a passenger tailpipe? It moves slowly and stays in the air/does not disappear quickly
iirc, continues to smoke when not at idle too
Is this coolant getting in the combustion chamber somehow? I doubt its oil. Burning oil would create black smoke?
This is a 350 with gm heads and intake, edelbrock 60cfm carb
It stinks a little but I cant put my finger on the smell to compare it
BondoSpecial 03-23-2010, 11:04:57 PM cracked head
Eric_04 03-23-2010, 11:16:33 PM Could be a cracked head, head gasket, cracked cylinder(ask me how I know). Check your oil, it will be whitish gray/ maybe a little oil color. Also check your radiator and see if your antifreeze level has dropped at all. If either of these are the case the only way to find out for sure is to pull it apart.

Oil creates a white tinted blue smoke. White smoke sounds like water vapor..
Chevy 350 03-24-2010, 12:13:50 AM Where do the heads usually crack? Would I be able to spot anything noticeable with the valve cover removed?

between the intake and exh valve seats in the chamber area ..............very common problem with #882 heads

In the valve seat area.
The only way you'd be able to spot anything with only the valve cover removed is if water was getting in your oil and the engine oil was starting to look like a milkshake.

IF it's the smog head you will know once rocker cover is off. It could also be a leak from intake even if you find white coloured oil.
Rule out heads first.
FlaJunkie 03-24-2010, 09:54:56 AM Put a bottle of Barr's stop-leak in the radiator and give it a day or two...
DoTheDew 03-24-2010, 11:58:09 AM What is the outside temperature? If its cool outside, it will do that when the engine is still warming up
Chevy 350 03-24-2010, 12:35:00 PM What is the outside temperature? If its cool outside, it will do that when the engine is still warming upWhy only for the passenger side? Driver side you can barely see anything coming from tailpipe.
Passenger side is very obvious
BondoSpecial 03-24-2010, 12:38:49 PM If it's only one side, something is wrong, it's not normal warm up vapor. I put a pair of smog era lightweight casting junkyard heads on a 318 chrysler for my brother and it had white smoke out one bank only. The heads looked fine to the naked eye but when I replaced them with another set the smoke was gone. There was a hairline crack somewhere, probably between the valve seats, that we didn't see.
z28rod 03-24-2010, 06:48:54 PM hairline crack in pass side head or blown gasket maybe ???
motorhead76 03-24-2010, 11:54:35 PM Oil would be a blue smoke. Do a pressure test on your coolant system. Pull the plugs on the side its steaming out of and look them over you should be able to see a difference in the cylinder its burning in.Pressurise the coolant system and see if the pressure leaks off.The plug that it is burning the coolant if that is your problem will be clean and whiteish.Sometimes the radiator will bubble with the cap off and smell the coolant to see if it smells like exhaust also. You can also do a compression test on the cylinder on that side to see if there is a differnce in one of them or see if a cylinder leaks off.
z28rod 03-25-2010, 07:41:55 AM Maybe time for a vortec head replacement ????
