Hey folks. My beater is a 1988 Buick Electra with the 3.8L six. The car has 68K original miles.

Yesterday, I felt a little bit of a chatter in the 3-4 shift, and this morning the car was very hesitant to get into overdrive (rpms would run up, get off the gas and it would coast in third, get back on and it would run then grab 4th).

If it makes any difference, this morning was the first frost, but the car was completely warm and still not working correctly. I have yet to drive it home from work.

My frist car was a 1987 Olds with the same powertain and the same problem. I can't afford to have this car die like my frist one. Any suggestions for where to start looking for the problem?

4.8 Caddy swap? J/K

Update:

It did it again after work, but only until the trans warmed up. Then it was like normal.

I checked the level and it was a pint low and pretty burnt (brown). I topped off, but I still have the same problem. I think I'm going to have it flushed and have the filter changed tomorrow. Any other ideas?

This sounds like a 700R4 doing what they do best.

First readjust your TV cable that controls the shifts. If that doesn't solve it, replace the TV cable and readjust it again.

Next, you need a tranny expert.

I just had the trans flushed, and it's slipping like crazy. I'm pretty sure it's toast. At least the guy at Jiffy Lube wants to buy the car.

I belive thats a 4t60 tranny, there good trannys that can take a beating (beat the bejesus outta mine for 106k), but they do tend 2 slip 1ce in a while. Run down to the parts store and put in a bottle of lucas tranny fix, should firm the shifts back up, then sell the car.

i don't even think lucas can help... after about 10 minutes you lose all gears, forward and reverse... but if you wait, they come back for another ten...

that's why I never flush a trans that has any miles on it, almost everyone I've seen done did the same thing
