Your best bet is to go to a T-5 (ok) or a T-56 (best) manual tranny. or you could go with a richmond 4+1 speed and have an economy rear gear, say 2.56 or 2.73. The richmond has really deep gears, opposite of an overdrive tranny but with the 2.56 rear gear you still get great fuel economy.

To answer your guestion as far as I know there are no factory "performance" overdrive GM 4 speeds though.

maybe find (or have built) some custom gears for it, i'd e-mail some of the custom tranny places and see if they can make or get some custom gears for it, it would become a 3+1 then but you will have an O/D

No, White_Boii is completely correct. There is a way to put overdrive in a 4spd. You lose your 1:1 gear altogether and instead have an overdrive ratio there. I forget how it is done. I remember reading about it on a Ford Toploader page somewhere. You switch 4th gear with another one (maybe 3rd gear or something, it was just a matter of moving gears around). I don't remember now, but if you find it, please e-mail me misterluckies@yahoo.com because I would like to do the same thing.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't 4th gear a straight shot through . It doesn't use any gears, thats why it is 1:1. It just locks the imput to the output shaft. So I am not sure how you could make it work.

I finally found the info on putting overdrive in a 4 speed. Unfortunately, it seems we would have to make gears.

Go to: http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html
(also lots of great parts for muncies!)

It says that from 77-78 Ford offered overdrive in the toploader. They flipped the 3-4 lever upside down so when you shifted 4th, you were actually in 3rd which was geared 1:1. Then, they changed the ratio of 4th. We could probably change the gear that connects the input to the output to get the overdriven gear. And if we leave third gear alone, we'd be able to keep the cluster. This would give a big jump from 3rd to 4th, but it may still not be too bad. I haven't opened mine up yet to see my options. Anyway, check out the site. It may give you some ideas.

And if you find anything, let me know.
