What dictates engine RPM in Drive on an auto? Say if I set my curb idle to 950, and my idle in gear is about 850, how can I adjust that to possilby a lower RPM?

that's my question...is idle in gear only adjusted indirectly through curb idle, or it is a separate adjustable item?

There is no really "adjustable" way to separate idle in park and idle in gear on an auto/carbureted car. You'll have to lower the idle in park.

idle in gear is a function of how "tight" or "loose" your torque convertor is. The tighter it is, the more of an RPM drop there will be when you put it into gear. All you can do is try to get a compromise between the two, they are not independently adjustable.
