Thanks Strange81Z 11-04-2003, 04:59:00 PM Is the motor still mounted to the subframe with your motor mounts? If so, the the majority if not all of the weight will be there. I would think that you would be OK to put a jack on your oil pan, but I would put a small piece of 2X4 between your jack and oil pan. But I wouldn't think that you would even need to use the jack if it's still mounted to your subframe. zeebad1 11-04-2003, 05:37:00 PM You definitly want to support the engine. The block of wood is a necessity if you jack under the oil pan. You could also use a hoist from above, but that's a little more difficult. If the back of the engine drops too far, there's a chance that the distributor can hit the firewall. 70RATZ28 11-04-2003, 06:56:00 PM Just take off the distributor cap and put a jack w/ a 2x4 on it under the oil pan. It will support the engine just fine. HCKY23 11-04-2003, 08:23:00 PM also put a 2x4 between the firewall and engine to prevent the engine from tilting back and wacking the distributor on the firewall. ------------------ Steve. 74 orig owner 383, Comp 280, Sportsman II, HD TH350, 3:42 posi, 4wdisc, 12:1 box, IAS, headers, true-dual w/H-pipe. Prolly got some rounded off heads on the old ones, huh ? http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif MacDaddy 11-07-2003, 01:34:00 AM Definitly support the engine with a wood block. I would hesitate to support it with a jack as the jack can sometimes slowly creep down. If you don't have enough wood blocks, then go down next to any railroad. There are usually pieces of old railroad ties there that are well preserved because of all the creosote in them. ------------------ Gordon 1979 Camaro Berlinetta ddeennis 11-07-2003, 09:07:00 PM i dont use a jack..........i use a jack stand with some flat pieces of wood and i keep shimming them til they fit snug........then i just bench press the tranny out by hand......going in is just as easy......no jack to worry about bleading down and dont have to worry about the dist. fastlane80Z28 11-10-2003, 10:19:00 AM Well I got the trans out. It just hung up a little about half way for some reason. We had to wiggle it to slide it out. I have had a vibration problem since owning the car. I found bolts missing from the cross member and 3 from bell housing. Who ever worked on this before was not an impressive mechanic. |
