my 79 with the org 305 at 115000 miles on it ticks, knocks, smokes and leaks. so we decided to put our other 305 we have in the shop in the 79.

were already going to be pulling a head off to get a broke off exaust bolt out. so while we have that off and the motors just sitting there.. were going to put a edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock 600cfm carb, tube headers, and a nice little cam. so what cam should i get? im going for the jegs or summit cam. i want to just be able to hear it lope.

i know, i know, its a 305. but its a street car and im 16.. sooo....

thanks for any advice!

i had a 327/350 cam but it was in a 350 not a 327 or a 305 it sounded great
look for something in the range of that too
duration was around 222 at .050
and lift was .444
go a little smaller though

This cam is alot like the Edelbrock Performer Plus cam that matches your intake, which should be pretty good, especially for a daily driver with automatic trans and stock rear gears:

Once you get the cam installed and broken in, you should be able to put your timing at about 10 degrees advanced, and run the idle around 500-600 rpm to get a decent lope out of it.

Any bigger cam will probably require better-than-stock valve springs and you would need to check valve-to-piston clearances. The one closest to what 76z28 mentions is this one:

A sweet cam for a 305 with the right valve springs.

I always get new lifters with a new cam.... they arnt that expensive for stock hyd lifters.....and i would do the timing chain also while you have her apart , that motor should wake up then a little....

yes you have to do lifters
if you are flat tappet
you dont want to do old lifters with a new cam

+1

The xe262 will have a little lope in a 305 and should be a great performer with an aftermarket intake and a set of headers.

The summit cam is a ok cam for a stock motor, but it will have a stock like idle.

In a 305 that cam should sound pretty good.

another question...
was the dipstick on the pass side on 350 and drivers on 305? or did this change over the years?

Here is some good info on cams.

The deal on dipsticks is based on the year 1980(I think it was 80) and older they were on the
drivers side, newer ones are on the pass. side.
