ok i got my 2004r...was there much dif. in these trannies from one car to the next?

mine i was told came out of a mini van of some sort year unknown.....it does need a rebuild........

if all the parts was cleaned and rebuilt with a basic overhaul kit( not a cheapo) and a shift kit with a 2500 stall.....how much power could this tranny handle....would a honest 300 hp to the ground motor be ok with this tranny?

ive rebuilt the th350 trannys but have never been inside of the 2004r trannys........is there much dif on the insides........should there be something to look for when reworking this tranny like i would a th350?

im not asking this tranny to last 20 years ....if i just put a basic over haul in it with a shift kit and stall would it hold up for awhile with daily driving with the once in awhile trip down the strip.....there would be no slicks or nitrous on this tranny just everyday driving and some drag racing.

wondering what would be the weak link for a tranny like this in a performance car.....what are some of the problem areas with a 2004r........

the tranny would go into a 80 camaro.....

A stock rebuild, woth a good shift kit should suffice as long as you take care of the problem areas.

You need to replace the sun shell with a nrew hardened one, about $20-25.
Also be sure the pump stator is hardened, if not it needs replaced. The shaft that goes into the convertor...
The forward drum is the next weakest point but at 300 hp and no slicks I wouldn't worry about it.
It's $400 and up....
Also need a good band and a better than stock 2nd gear servo. A GN servo would work for you.

What are the letter codes on the tag on the back pass side?
I'll try to tell you what it came out of.
The Grand National and Monte SS were improved with better VB's and servos.

dead in the middle..."057"

then right along the bottom...."86-CAB-55822"

hey jake if i sent you this tranny want would you charge me to rebuild it. as we talked about above..........whats your zip so i can figure what shipping is......thanks dennis.....im comfy with a th350 tearing those apart but im not to sure on this one......im sure i could rebuild it but you know im not sure what im really looking for......

Dennis,
Glad you made it back home ok. The way folks drive at my intersection, it can get hairy sometimes. I was told the tranny game out of some mid 80's van. The folks at bowtieoverdrives and netgearhead.com might be able to give you some advice as well.
From what I understand, (and I could be wrong) stock 2004r is good to mid 12's? and stock stall is 2000? I have not yet heard what the diff is between van/truck? version and the stuff the GN's run, except that the GN stuff had a little more HD parts @ factory.
I thought I had heard Jake say that he wasn't doing anymore tranny's for a while. If that is not the truth, I will be looking for him come spring http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

ddeennis,
It's an '86 model (good thing) from a Pontiac Grand Prix or 2+2?, probably from behind a 305.

Probably an OK unit to start with.

In reality you can probably rebuild the 200 if you can do a TH350, a little different but not too much.

A few slightly tricky area's, it has 3 different endplay settings.
It is very sensitive to TV setting as a 700 is, and this is why I try to avoid building a 200 or 700 for others because if the TV cable is not right the trans is toast, and then it would be my fault....

I was avoiding trans until my dad's Chevelle was done but he sold it anyway, so I need to finish up a couple of projects and then I may start back rebuilding them on a limited basis.
I have a killer TH400 I need to sell... put it on Ebay but I guess the bidder had a heart attack...
So here we go again...

Next spring I will be able to build one.

ddeennis, where do you live?

thanks Anthony on the parts....really would like to buy that z28 of yours but it may not happen i dont think i can pull the money out of my magic pocket so soon....i'll keep in touch with ya on it .....maybe you might have it when i come up with the rest of the dough......i got everything cleaned up already i bought from ya and will soon get that rear end under the car i found another member here who will sell me the rest of the brake stuff to complete the rear end..............

thanks jake for the info......i know i wont get it in til next spring so maybe i will look you up.......i weight the tranny and it weights in at 95 lbs with out the converter on it and no dip stick.....most of the tranny fluid was drain out too.....so shipping would not be bad....i shipped some camaro doors and they was like 102lbs each and it was 78 bucks to ship them both so the tranny would be well under the 50 bucks to ship.....all i was going to do was wrap the heck out of it with some heavy cardboard and tape it up real good to ship and it should come in well under 110 lbs....i would make sure there was no extra fluid in it too before i did.......i wouldnt blame you if it went bad i know those tv cables have to be right so i would make sure i had it set up well before i ran it hard.......

maybe i will get some reading material on it and teach myself the ins and out of that tranny and learn the name of the parts over winter so i feel better then just tearing it down and puting the rebuild kit in and not knowing what the parts are called and what they do.....lol

ive gone thru the th350 blind just replacing the parts that were broke and rebuilding them and not even knowing what they were called or what they do...so sad uh?

i dont even know what a sun shell looks like ....lol or even were it goes......

i just tear them down and fix them and thats all........i need to learn the tranny like i know engines and carbs that way im more rounded in knowledge .....

i live in kansas just south east of wichita were intialD lives.........

Not a problem. On the rear, keep in mind you can slap drums back on them to run on until you get your disk stuff together...

I do have an extra mc/res/booster setup for factory rear disk, I was told it was working condition, but I was just gonna use it as a core for some new stuff...

Don't worry about the Z. I'm starting to change my mind (again) on selling it. Chances are you'll have another shot at it...
