I recently bought a 327 rebuilt that has not ran yet, i notice that the paint was peeling off when i was taking the heads off to inspect it and ask buddy what kind of paint he used and said he used plasti-kote Metal Flake which is not high heat, what's the best way to strip the paint off?

Strange choice of paint....... I would use either a wire brush on a drill or use a towel and laquer thinner.

Makes me wonder how its built if he didn't even use decent paint.

The peeling is probably due to poor prep work rather than poor quality paint. I know a professional restorer who uses catalyzed Urethane to paint the motors - with excellent, long term results. Only a small section of the engine really gets hot enough to warrant extreme duty paint.

I'd be reluctant to spray aircraft stripper on an engine - that stuff is pretty aggressive. who knows what else it might attack and heaven forbid it go down the wrong hole. Perhaps you can get away with leaving it as is (assuming, off course, that you like the color)

Dupli color 500* engine paint is what I use on 90% of my engine builds. Holds up very well.

I even paint cast alum parts like intakes, heads, fuel pumps, etc with thier cast coat alum color to keep the alum from soaking up water, dirt, oil, grease, etc

2 coats each should do it.

Is the engine built exactly the way you want or did you buy someone's build that is close to what you wanted. The reason I ask is the motor is on the ground and simple to change stuff......for now.

I have some pics of my engine when it arrived then we decided to add more upgrades on garage floor. ( very simple )

Thats what i used, wire brush, sanding, primer, more sanding then 2 coats Chevy orange. I pained the oil pan and water pump (1 Can primer and 2 paint)

Never ran it since the paint, but i think she will hold up.

I use this type of stripper to remove paint. MUCH better than the aircraft stripper.
