How do you guys do it? What is the proper slip distance? My new pinion yoke makes it so my current driveshaft is too long. Thanks

View Full Version : How to measure DS length Cam73 10-22-2003, 12:59:00 AM How do you guys do it? What is the proper slip distance? My new pinion yoke makes it so my current driveshaft is too long. Thanks craggar 10-22-2003, 10:44:00 AM When I built driveline I would put the tranny yoke in the tranny allowing about 3/4" for travel then measure from the center of the ujoint on the tranny yoke to the center of the ujoint on the diff yoke then give that measurment to the shop. camcojb 10-22-2003, 10:46:00 AM Call the shop who will do the driveshaft and ask them how they want it measured. Different shops want different measurements. My local shop wants me to measure from the end of the tailshaft on the trans to the center of the rear yoke. Some places want you to put a yoke in the trans, bottom it out inside the trans, pull it back 3/4" to 1" and then measure from the center of the front u-joint to the center of the rear u-joint/yoke saddle. I know this from working in a couple different driveline shops for over 10 years.Another thing don't just take it to any machine shop unless you have no choice, they either send it out and mark it up or they do it but unless they have a driveshaft balancer they can't balance it which should be done if you do anything to it. camcojb 10-22-2003, 02:18:00 PM I agree Craggar. The shop who wants the other measurements is the largest in Northern California. I think they don't trust people to pull the yoke back out 3/4" before measuring, I don't know! I've tried to give them the center to center measurements before; they write them down but then ask for the tailshaft to rear center u-joint measurement also. Who knows! Jody ------------------ My Cars (http://www.camcojb.com) craggar 10-22-2003, 03:43:00 PM Maybe your right Jody, they just don't trust people and it doesn't hurt to give both I guess, that way if the math doesn't add up they can find out why before they cut it. Cam73 10-22-2003, 04:42:00 PM I'll call them up and see if they can give me a price as well. It's kinda of a bitch to get a tape in there along with the old driveshaft and the loop. What can happen if a drive shaft is too short or too long? Thanks for the help craggar 10-22-2003, 05:20:00 PM Too long and it can get jammed into the tranny when the suspension moves which wouldn't be nice and too short can cause a lot of problems from vibrations to even falling out.You have a little room for error but try and get it as close as possible. If you don't want to take the tranny yoke off measure like Jody said from the center of the ujoint on the diff. to the end of the tail housing on the tranny, then measure from the center of the ujoint on the tranny yoke to 3/4"+- on the machined surface of the yoke where it slides into the tranny.Give both measurments and tell them how you did it and they can see if they get the same results as you.Make a little drawing as well pictures work well. Cam73 10-22-2003, 09:17:00 PM Well I just got back from court and I owe the man some money so it will be a few weeks. I'm gonna see if I can put the old shaft in and let it hang and measure from the tranny yoke u joint to the center of the pinion yoke then - 3/4". Thanks for the help. |
