Hi Everyone,

Just wondering how hard it will be if I were to remove the rear diff. assy from my 1980 Camaro myself, in my driveway with hand tools.

- Do I have to remove the fuel tank?
- Is there any specific safety precautions I should be aware of? (On top of the usual)
- When measured, how difficult is it? (1 out of 10)

thanks!

The whole rear end or just the pieces in the 'pumpkin'?

Dropping the rear isn't hard at all. Just remember to use PB blaster on all the fasteners, especially the rear shackles.

I agree- it's not hard- just a pain-in-the-a$$. You have to disconnect everything- brake line, parking brake cable, swaybar, shocks, driveshaft, then if you're leaving the springs in place (i.e. not being painted) you can undo the rear spring perches only to get the axle out- or both front and back and take springs with you. The "problem" areas will likely be the brake lines and shackle-bolts for the springs. Depending on condition of things- you may want to be prepared to have to do some cutting/replacement of some bolts.

I wouldn't touch the springs unless you want to change these too. There is too much of a chance of busting the clip nut thingees that hold the front of the springs in.

You can take the entire rear end assembly out from either side assuming you can lift it over the springs. An assistant (preferably a strong person) is a real help, but I have yanked them out and put them back by myself before.

Cool, thanks Mike and Eric.

Things should come out easy because everything is new (leaf springs, perches, brake lines e-cables.

I WILL NOT touch the leaf springs.

Once again, thanks!

PS> I have been bitten by the "detailing bug" and the virus has hit me hard. I almost finished with the frame/underhood pieces and floor, when that is all said and done, it's time for the rear diff. assy!

I even bought stainless steel muffler clamps because the ones on my car have surface rust on them!!! It's crazy I tell's ya!!

I agree.. Isnt too hard.. Just make sure Everything is disconnected b4 you start pulling & yanking.. Almost forgot to disconnect my brake lines last time.. Just need a jack & a buddy, after unbolting everything, lift it up in the center with the jack, you on 1 side, buddy on the other, pull to one side till it clears the spring, then slide it out from under clearing the other spring, and out she goes.. Took me two times to get the process down, both times I did it solo.. Taking out & re-installing..
