View Full Version : help decoding
joe-balls 03-10-2010, 05:50:46 PM hey guys i was just curious if anyone can help me tell where this motor originated from.
the castings are 14016379 and the id code (is what i'm having trouble with) is a little rough to read what i can see is V0319800 i can make out the V (Flint) and the last 3 digits are 800.
Can this be a crate?
Any help will be appreciated
thanks
joe
Yellow 77 03-10-2010, 08:59:12 PM joe,
Try this http://www.mortec.com
joe-balls 03-10-2010, 10:21:39 PM yeah, thanks
i know all that, im just trying to figure out the suffix code, i cant find it anywhere (and i've searched), i know the V stands for Flint and the next 4 are supposed to be the dates but i cant find 8OO anywhere (last three digits)
joe-balls 03-11-2010, 08:06:40 AM anyone else?
a550550 03-11-2010, 08:30:06 AM It is probably not 800. I have only seen letters as a suffix
joe-balls 03-11-2010, 09:41:46 AM so it must be a crate motor then? because it is as plain as day 800 (last three digits), i'll get a pic up when i can. it could very well be BOO? but it looks like 800 to me
joe-balls 03-11-2010, 11:57:34 AM well i just took some pics and they didnt turn out to well but i can still make out the last 3 digits (800)

Can this be a marine block? or a crate block? i dont have a clue, i cant find it anywhere.
joe-balls 03-11-2010, 12:38:30 PM anyone else have any idea?

Scroll down this page (http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-engine-code-stampings.php) towards the bottom - it explains the "800"
flowjoe 03-11-2010, 12:49:32 PM And this:
1978-85 14016379 350-- - car, truck
was found here (http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php)
joe-balls 03-11-2010, 01:35:15 PM Thanks, but i seen those pages and thats why i ask if it was a crate motor because i cant make out the other digit, it looks like 9800 but it's a 2800 for the crates, or is that just an example and all 800 are crates?

Don't know what to tell you. Since the number you have doesn't match normal coding for production engines I think the best explanation is on that web page. My reading of that page was that you have a crate motor with a slight variation on the examples given. Does the block have dual dipstick holes? What is the cast date of the block?
Looks like yours might read "3800" perhaps a different year crate motor than the example? Perhaps a different crate variant than the example?
MadMike 03-11-2010, 03:57:03 PM It's a crate engine. Run of the mill, average targetmaster 350.

It doesnt have dual dipstick holes and the casting dates from the block # were 77-79 on one and 77-84 on another site.

i thaught the V in the suffix stood for Flint, and the targetmaster was made in mexico.
does the suffix code index even apply with targetmaster motors?

No, what is the casting date on the actual block (not form some web site)? If you have that then perhaps you can get someone to look up the part number for crate motors in that year.
MadMike 03-11-2010, 09:41:56 PM >i thaught the V in the suffix stood for Flint,
it does.
>and the targetmaster was made in mexico.
Most of them are now, but this appears to be a late 70's, early 80's vintage piece. back when they were making most engines in the USA or Canada still.
>does the suffix code index even apply with targetmaster motors?
No, except for the addendum down at the bottom of the above mentioned page. Remember the SUFFIX code is the ending portion of an engine CODE. The whole bunch of letters/numbers is the "engine code". The suffix code (generally 2 or 3 letters) typically identifies a production application. In your case, the engine code is identifying the assembly plant, date & significant part # of the thing in question.
Get a casting date code off the block. And where is the dipstick? I'm going to guess passenger side and this is a 1980 piece. but that's a guess.
