When i turn the car on before it starts up theres a loud grinding noise. Anyone know what it could be?

Grinding while cranking means you have too much clearance. You need to add one or more half shims, around the bolt further from the oil pan. This is according to the instructions that came with the new SBC starter I just installed on my truck. If you get noise once you release the key, not when cranking, then it said you need to add full shims to bring the starter further from the flywheel.

I've always done it using this method below, and had nothing but success.

Could be the bending drive going out of the starter. Mine started doing it a while back on the truck. Assuming all the teeth are good, its probably the bendix, especially if it never did it before.
