The machine shop that has been doing work for me said they will build my engine for $100.00. I really want to do this myself but I also want it done right. It has been MANY years since I've built a motor and even then I was more of the "gofer" (go fer this, go fer that). Should I try this myself or just let them do it? I have a book that pretty much deatails step by step but a book can't replace experience.

I do all my own engine assembly work. Started putting SBC's together when I was 16. I really enjoy doing it. If you think you can do it, go for it. Just don't a afraid to ask questions if you get jammed up. We all learned by asking questions.

I want to learn how to rebuild rear ends next, carrier, ring & pinion installation ect. Not to may guys around here do it anymore. I saw a pretty detailed book about building performance rear ends at a book store last week. That might be my next step.

Do you have all the basic tools and a good clean shop where nobody will mess with your stuff?

100 bucks is hard to beat, especially if you trust them. They want the parts sales, is what's up.

No problem on the tools although I'm sure there are a few things I would need to get. I like to think I'm pretty mechanically inclined so I think I could do it but as mentioned "100 bucks is hard to beat"! If I do decide to do it myself I will be asking questions for sure! I just don't want to do something stupid in the process and be kicking myself in the a$$ for not letting them do it! Any more opinions?????

100 bucks is a great deal. But there's nothing like hearing that motor fire up after rebuilding it yourself. If you have lots of questions, you have come to the right place! ;) When my first rebuild was successful, my chest (and my head) swelled up with pride. I have done several mild rebuilds, and am now in the process of building a 600+ horsepower motor. In my garage. By myself. Go for it!

$100 is a small price to pay to have someone assemble. The skill/tools etc..Thats a deal to have a pro do it.

I was quoted $350 for the 454.

I wasn't trying to be a proponent of having them build it, it's just a good price. Really it's a smokin deal.

I build my own junk, but I know that is not for everybody.
