View Full Version : Stock quadrajet intake

I swapped an old aluminum quadrajet intake on my 406 and I couldn't tell a difference between it and my 7546 Weiand X-Celerator. I know this particular Weiand intake isn't anything to right home about. It looks better than a stock intake, but I can't say it runs any better. I had to use an adapter plate to get my 650 double pumper to fit the quadrajet intake.

I'm thinking the Weiand may have been wrong for my combo to begin with. A single plane on an engine that doesn't ever go over 5500 rpm is probably wrong. The stock dual plane is probably helping with the 406's low speed torque.

I swapped out a stock intake for an Edelbrock Performer a few years back and I couldn't tell a difference either.

Maybe one day I'll swap on an Edelbrock RPM Airgap and see what happens.

Thanks for your time,

Joe

single plane killer for low end tq. by a wiend stealth dual plane..... why would you put a single plabne om a under 5500 sbc anyways.......?????

The Wieand Xcelerator intake was a little to much for your engine combination. The GM aluminum Q-Jet intake is a good low RPM piece. BUT putting a spacer/adaptor on it usually is a negative thing as it changes the charge signals of the intake. You'd probably see more improvement putting a Q-Jet carb on the Q-Jet intake (obviously without the spacer). Better yet would to be get a Wieand Action Plus intake ( http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WND-8120/ )to put the Q-Jet on although your Holley square bore will fit on it too without a spacer..

I'd stick with the newer intakes, such as the preformer model, or switch up to a new air gap model. Technology has come a long way from the old days, and old intakes like that are only worth money to those who are romanced by the old days. While they may have worked back then, they are snot when compared to what we have today. I don't think you'll ever feel that big of difference in the seat of your pants by switching intakes. They'll help, but not in anyway I think that you could measure without a dyno or track time. I run a single plane torquer II from eddy in my car for hood clearance. It runs about the same as the dual plane did. I'm sure I probably lost a little bottom end in comparison, but I never felt it. It also allowed me to run a phenolic spacer to keep the carb cool, so the added runner length may have made up the difference, I dunno. Plus when I'm floating down the highway turning 2300 rpm, I'm entering the bandwidth of the singleplan, so I figure its doing its job just fine.

For now I'll keep the adapter/spacer, I've only had my 650 Holley about a year.

I will stick with a dual plane when I get a new intake.

I hav enever known anyone who has had any luck with that intake. Just get an eddy performer or rpm performer and your engine will thank you for it.
Holley 300-36 would be the best one.

Thanks for the reply. For the next few months I'll run the quadrajet intake. After that I'll swap it out for a better piece.

I had a Weiand Stealth before and it was a great intake. Whatever I get will be a dual plane.

Thanks again,

Joe
