Hey guy's (and gal's)
New to the site and have a question. Which 383 engine would be a better street weapon: A GM ZZ383 or a Smedding Extreme 383. Both have similar HP and torque numbers. Anyway, the motor will be going in a 80 Z-28 with 3.73 posi, TCI Steet Fighter Turbo 350 with a Breakaway converter, headers.
Thanks for any input:confused:

Either one will be fine for the application you have.

Ben Smeding builds nice motors designed to work on pump gas and he stands behind them. I've not heard of any problems with them over the many years they have been in business. He starts with new components so it's not a junkyard core rebuild.

The GM ZZ383 is a great engine and it is a little different than the average 383 because of the special crank with the 3.80" stroke as opposed to the conventional 3.75" stroke. This isn't a major difference but it creates a lack of available aftermarket pistons when it comes time to rebuild the GM engine.

Personally, I've seen both and know of people who have great luck with either. On the GM side, our own Mary Pozzi has, (had) one. In either case, everyone I know that has owned and ran either engine, always ended up wanting more power!

It comes down to the price and the convenience for you.

Sorry that I don't have a definitive answer for you but I hope this information is of help...

I had the ZZ383 in my `84 Z28 with a TPI set-up and I loved it to the bone.
I would always prefer a brand new engine over a rebuild one.
